Accessing Outlook over the web?

B

Brett

Is there a web based mail site that will allow me to access my third party
POP accounts and synchronize with Outlook XP?

I thought mail2web.com was the answer. They use an Outlook Exchange
interface over the web but you can only access their mail account. No
adding of your own. I'm especially interested in the ability to create
folders on the web based mail and have email downloaded from them into my
desktop Outlook. Usually mail will download only from the Inbox of a web
based mail program. I also want it downloaded from custom folders.

Uploading/downloading synchronization with Outlook would be nice.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Brett

Is there a setting in Outlook that tells it to download from the Inbox only?
Can I tell it to all download from folder1?

Thanks,
Brett

You should then get an mail account that supports IMAP. A paid subscription
to Hotmail + the MSN Outlook Connector will also do the trick.

Tips of the month:
-FREE tool; QuickMail. Create new Outlook items anywhere from within Windows
-Properly back-up and restore your Outlook data

You're right on Hotmail but I don't want to pay 10 bucks/mo for this.

Thanks,
Brett

As long as you leave your messages on the POP server, you can access them
with any POP client you want, as long as the network to which you're
attached allows the connection. You will not, however, be able to access
what has been downloaded to your PC without an always-on connection to your
PC and a tool like GoToMyPC or VNC.
I thought mail2web.com was the answer.

And in many cases it is. You can access many web-based mail servers with
that service. Moreover, many ISPs provide web access to their own mail
servers.

To do this you need a different account type than POP. POP contains no
concept of folders. IMAP and HTTP are the two Internet-based account types
that allow folders.

No - they don't. They have acknowledged this. When I ask them how to setup
mail access to my own domain, they only reply they can't because it isn't
hosted with them. So I cancelled.

If I have a PST on my desktop Outlook, where will the IMAP folders reside
since they will be views of the server?

With an IMAP account, the folders reside on the IMAP server, with a local
cache (stored in a PST) on your PC in order to optimize the performance.
The messages may be echoed on yor PC, but they stay on the server so that
they can be accessed from any other IMAP client.

I'm using IMAP and believe this will do fine for me. Because I mostly
categorize my messages are don't delete them, I'll eventually hit my disk
quote on the server. What can I do at that point if I want to save some of
my messages?

Also, will Outlook rules still work?

Thanks for all the help,
Brett

If you've hit your quota on the server, then your only choice is to remove
some messages from the server, either saving them to a local PST or deleting
them.

Frankly I'm not sure. Typically, Outlook's rules will work only on the
delivery location Inbox and, as far as I can tell, an IMAP server cannot be
specified as the delivery location, so my inclination is to say "no".
Others have reported that some rules (the Junk Mail filter in particular) do
operate against an IMAP message store, but I'm not convinced.
