My family has 3 PCs in the house and we want to access our e-mail in
Outlook from any PC. I don't want some e-mail on one PC and some on
another. I would like to have one Inbox, but let all 3 PCs access
that same InBox. Is this possible without using Exchange Server?
There;s a way to do it, but not all at the same time. Outlook's data store
can be used only by a single instance of Outlook. You'd have to close
Outlook on one machine in order to see it on another. It would also screw
with any rules you may havem but perhaps that's not an issue for you.
Create a folder on one machine and share it on the local network. With
Outlook closed, move that machine's PST to the shares folder. Restart
Outlook and when it complanis it can't find the folders, browse to the PST's
new location, select it and click OK. The first Outlook will now be able to
see its folders again. Close it.
On the second machine, with Outlook closed, rename the PST and start
Outlook. When it complains, browse to the network-shared PST, select it,
and click OK. That Outlook wil now view the same folders as the first.
Close Outlook.
Repeat on as may PCs as you want. Keep in mind, though, that the network
sharing of PSTs is unsupported and under the rigt conditions can result in
data loss or PST corruption, so make sure you mack up frequently. Also keep
in mind you'll be able to open only one Outlook at a time.
