I've put a number of holiday photos on a "my pictures"
file in Drive C. Past additions to this file are
accessible via Windows explorer, but this set can't be
opened because "Windows doesn't know what programme
created them". The advice Windows gives to find the
creating programme doesn't work. At the moment I can on.y
access the photos through the editing softwar (Paintshp
Pro). Suggestions welcomed.

You should be able to open a folder of files to see the individual
files, as icons, whatever file type they are. And if it is an extension
that is not known to the system, you should be able to r-click; take
'Open With' and point it to PaintShop Pro. Or set up a file association
from within that.

You might, if it is an unusual extension, also use the excellent free
Irfan View as a basic viewer - it complements Paintshop very nicely.
www.irfanview.com And let it set up associations for all types it knows
(which is a lot) that you do *not* want to go direct to PaintShop
