accessing files on crashed hard drive

Had a hard drive crash on machine using Windows XP Home. Installed new hard
drive and installed windows no problem. Have now hooked up old drive as
slave and at times am able to access the drive and see folders, files etc. I
would like to copy the files in the my document folder from the old drive to
the new drive. When I try accessing the old drive my documents folder I
receive a message denying me access to the drive. I did have the user
account password protected on the old drive and am wondering if that is why I
am denied access when trying to open the folder. If this is the case, is
there any kind of work around? I cannot boot to that drive due to bad
sectors that have developed. Any help would be appreciated.
