Accessing Address Book Sub-Folders

O

Windows Vista Home Premium
In Windows XP Outlook Express, I was able to create sub-folders in my
address book so that I could segregate my contacts. When I created a new
message and clicked on the "To:" I was presented with the address book with
all the contacts of the "Main Identity Contacts" folder displayed. This
address book had a drop-down that presented the list of folders. I could
click on the folder I wanted and the contacts display would change to the
contacts contained in the selected folder.
Now I have Vista. I click on my Windows Mail icon and I get the new
Outlook Express display. I click on Tools - Windows Contacts and I get my
address book. I click on File - New - Folder and I create a new folder and
I place a few people in that folder. Fine.
Now the problem. I want to send a message to someone listed in one of
these sub-folders. I bring up Windows Mail. I click on "To:" and I get the
address book with all the people in my main folder listed. But I see no way
that I can select any of the sub-folders I have created. The sub-folders
are not even displayed. How do I send a message to someone who is listed in
a sub-folder? Thanks for your time. Otto

Thanks for your response, but I couldn't find an answer to my problem.
I am not dealing with "groups" wherein I place a number of contacts in a
group so that I can send one email to everyone in that group simply by
sending it to that group.
Rather, I am placing a number of contacts in a different folder. My
specific problem is this: Having created such a folder and having placed a
few contacts in that folder, how can I then access that folder so that I can
choose one of those contacts to be the recipient of my email? This was
something that I did a lot of when I had XP and Outlook Express and it was
very simple. Thanks again. Otto
Both Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail will list all contacts
without respect to folders. They have subdivisions called Groups,
but it's not easy to select contacts from them. For more on using
Groups, see

You can create the folders, but WM will not show them when you click on To:,
CC: or BCC:

However, you can do it bassackwards if you have folders... open your
Contacts folder, open your sub-folder, select your recipient(s),
right-click,
select Action - Send Email

I was aware of what you wanted, and I advised you what was
available. Sorry, what OE offered is not available.

Thanks for that. I think you have solved the problem. I tried it out
and it works. And you're right, it's bassackwards, but you can't knock
success. Thanks again. Otto

This did not work for me. I got a failure message. If I get that fixed, how
can I use this system to forward a message? better yet, is there any way to
import the old address book or Outlook Express into Vista?

No, this method only works for creating a new message. To forward, you'd
have to open WM and select the message first.
To import the OE address book, copy the .wab file from the XP computer, and
import it into WM.
