Access2003 compact error

Whenever I compact an Access2003 database (mdb) file that I have just
closed, where that mdb includes mde references, Access2003 fails and
restarts.

So far the compact action has always been successful.

However, I cannot find any entries in the Knowledge Base concerning
this type of fatal error.

Has anyone else had this problem?
