Access XP generates errors

G

George Wilson

I am assisting a customer running Access XP on a Windows
XP system. This problem is pretty consistent and easily
reproduced on this database. Customer is placing his
cursor in a field on a form and doing a find. The first
time find is used all works well. The next time find is
used an error is generated: The expression that you
entered as a query parameter produced this error: 'The
expression you entered refers to an object that is closed
or doesn't exist'. The next time find is used we get error
that MSAcsess has generated errors and will be closing
down. The data searched for does not seem matter. My first
thought was possible corruption in one of the records in
the tables, because it cannot be reproduced on other
databases but when these essential items are copied into a
new database and then the same actions taken we get the
same result. Compact and repair seems to be useless, is
there another way to isolate what may be the issue or
repair the table that may be causing the problem. I made
sure the latest Jet engine is installed and still having
issues. Any help would be appreciated.
TIA
George

Hi Geroge,

SYMPTOMS
When you try to create a new Microsoft Access project file (ADP) or when
you try to upsize a Microsoft Access database file (MDB), Access appears to
stop responding (hangs), or you receive the following error message:

The expression you entered refers to an object that is closed or doesn't
exist.
RESOLUTION
Upgrade the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) on the client computer
to version 2.6 or later. You can download the latest version of MDAC from
the following Microsoft Web site:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/dataaccess
.asp

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products
that are listed at the beginning of this article.
MORE INFORMATION
Steps to Reproduce the Behavior
Install Access 2000 and the Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) on a clean
Microsoft Windows 2000 computer. Make sure that the Windows 2000 computer
is a member of a domain that contains a large number of SQL Servers.
Open the Northwind sample database in Access.
On the Tools menu, point to Database Utilities, and then click Upsizing
Wizard.
Click Create new database, and then click Next. Note that the Upsizing
Wizard appear to hang. If you click Next again, you will receive the error
message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
