Access 2003:

I realise that it is possible to export data from Access to Excel but is it
possible for it to be linked. I currently have a set of data that I need to
analyse and I cannot get the functions I need within a pivot table as it
seems to sum everthing rather than give me both sums and averages.

Any ideas?

Many Thanks,
Matt

Which way do you want to link?

If you want to link Access data into Excel:
In a blank (you want to make sure you do not overwrite data) Excel
spreadsheet go to Data - Import External Data - Import Data and browse to the
database and table you need. You can refresh the data by going to Data -
Refresh.

To link Excel to Access:
Go to File - Get External Data and browse to the file and sheet or range
needed.

Hope this helps.

In Excel, use the Menu Data / Import External Data then you can select
either Import Data ... (creating an independent set of data in Excel) or New
Database Query, i.e. MS Query to simply retrieve / select the data from
Access to be displayed / manipulated in Excel without creating an
independent set of data.

The second method will keep the data in Excel up-to-date as Access / JET
data changes ...

I have tried both ways that you suggested.

When i try to import the data i can select the database but then once i
click OK, i get nothing. If i export the data from a pivot table and try to
refresh nothing happens.

If i try to use Microsoft Query, it tells me I do not have the relevant
permissions even though I am typing in the username and password belonging to
me. I am also the admin user.

Hi... Try opening Access (without opening a database) and then join the
correct workgroup (tools/security/workgroup administrator), exit and try
again from Excel...

Good luck

Right ok, I went in as you said and clicked Join and it said something about
having successfully joined the workgroup.
But I still get the message as i go to run the microsoft query that I dont
have the user permissions. It gives me this message when i try to open the
front end as it is, and I have to run it using the shortcut.
