Access problem restrictanonymous=0 didn't work

Guest

Hi,
I can view all PC's on the network in network neighbourhood and can access
the files on all but PC named "study". This PC is visible but when I try to
connect I get the message "\\Study is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resouce. Contact the administrator of this
server to find out if you have access permissions." when I try to accesss the
PC.
In the past I have cured this problem with other PC's by altering the
restrictananymous setting to "0" with regedit, but in this case it has made
no difference.
This PC has XP SP2 and seems to have been stuffed since an automatic update.
It also won't let me edit my firewall settings giving the message "For your
security some settings are controlled by group policy". All group Policy
settings which relate to the windows Firewall are set to "Not Configured" and
the PC is not part of a domain nor is it a server.
This PC can acces the internet via a router and can see & access files on
other PC's on the network.

Any help appreciated.
Matt

Matt,

The restrictanonymous setting is one of the most common problems with Windows
Networking, but it's not the only one that might cause "not accessible ... not
permission...".

Any idea what Automatic Update caused the group policy problem? Any chance you
could retrieve your update history?

Let's take a look at the problem computer, and at two properly working
computers. Provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" for all 3 please.
Also identify each one as XP Home or Pro, and if Pro, using Simple File Sharing
enabled or disabled?

Hi Chuck,
Only 2 computers on network at this time, both on XP Pro SP2 both with
simple file sharing enabled, details are. Not sure when problem started
exactly as this is a home network and I only use it when I bring work home on
my laptop. Now however I want to add a third PC and share the problem PC's
printer & files. I have got the update log but it is huge, do you really
want me to past it nito a reply?

Matt,

OK, looking at the browstat and ipconfig logs, we see:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/reading-ipconfig-and-diagnosing.html>
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/browstat-utility-from-microsoft.html>
# Both computers are connecting to the network, and getting DHCP settings.
# Both computers are in the Medtech domain (workgroup).
# Both computers see each other ("2 servers in domain").
# Both computers have address resolution somewhat properly set (Mixed and
Unknown are OK).
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/address-resolution-on-lan.html>
# Both computers acknowledge the same master browser, Study.
# Matt shows an "error = 5" when trying to access the registry on Study.

The combination of the above findings makes me suspect you have a File Sharing
problem, not a Windows Networking problem.

You're using Simple File Sharing, so is the Guest account properly activated on
both computers?
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Help>

If no clues from any of the above articles, read the File Sharing
troubleshooting article:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html>
And read the Windows Networking troubleshooting article:

Matt,

one possible cause is that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is disabled.

www.michna.com/kb/wxnet.htm should find this.
