Access permissions

I have a laptop that had the motherboard go bad and I want to retrieve files
off of the hard drive. I took the drive out and am using another laptop to
try and copy the files. I can browse most of the hard disk but I get an
"access is denied" message when I try to browse to documents and settings. I
am using administrator privileges. How can I save these files without having
to reinstall Windows? Thanks.

Have you tried right-clicking on the folder, choose sharing and security ->
advanced -> click on the owner tab, and make your account the owner of the
folder and all subcontainers and objects? As long as you have local
administrator rights, you should be able to do so.

I have already tried this and I get the same message that I don't have
permission to view folder content and files. Thanks for the help though.

I think you need to boot the computer into safe mode and log in as
administrator. Then you will have access to security tab for files.

It is probably that you have locked your Documents and Settings.
I got that problem too one time.
If you don't know how to lock/unlock folders/files. Do this:

1. Open My Computer
2. Tools - Folder Options
3. Turn off simple sharing
4. Open properties of the folder/file
5. Open the Security tab.
6. Choose what group/folders have what permissions
7. Optional - Choose SPECIAL permissions that you should only edit if
you KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!
