access limits

I have run into a problem that indicates that there are limits in Access to
the total number of controls, or subforms or both than can exist at any one
time. For example, I have several forms that work fine if opened
individually but fail if too many are opened at the same time. These are
nonmodal forms. The error that occurs is that at some point, subform
controls fail to load their contained subforms. My question is what are
these limits? Is it on the total number of controls, the total of subform
controls, the total of subforms? I looked in the help and wasn't able to
find anything there. The fact that the forms work individually indicated
that the limit or limits is/are global rather than form or subform specific.
