Running Win XP home edition with SP 2, and I cannot access any files in my
system Volume Information folder. I cannot even open it, I get a message
"Access is denied" I am the administrator.

I looked at the troubleshooting article here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;309531&Product=winxp

And the problem is, when I right click on System Volume information folder,
I do NOT have a 'security" tab. I have a "sharing" tab to share with the
other people that use the computer, or network sharing.

I also tried the cmd prompt line, and that did not work either.

The reason I want to access this, is there is some malware in one of the
system restore back up folders that my Trend Micro Antiviral program keeps
picking up and blocking, so I get these nice annoying little popups telling
me what a good job my program is doing :)

Thanks so much!

Hi Chris,

You can see the Security tab only in Safe Mode (for XP Home). BTW, clearing the entire SR points is advisable in this case. Simply turn Off the System Restore monitoring and then turn it back On.

System Volume Information is the System Restore data.
Turn off/on System Restore to delete corrupted files:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.
Click System Restore Settings on left side.
Check "Turn off System Restore", click OK, follow prompts and reboot.
This deletes ALL Restore Points including corruption.
Then go back and turn on system Restore and create a Restore Point.

Thanks so much you two, that did the trick! :) and I'll remember can only
access SVR in Safe mode too for the future in Win XP Home edition.

I want to thank Jupiter Jones for this information. I spent at least 20
hours this week on line or on the phone with Microsoft support personnel and
my computer manufacturer explaining that the free space on my C drive dropped
from 94% to 43% after I did 3 system restores to correct problems I was
having with Outlook. Although they were very helpful, nothing they
recommended worked and I was told that I would have to reinstall the whole
operating system. I was so upset and then I found this newsgroup site,
searched for Q&A's under System Volume Information and found the info posted
by J.J. I followed the instructions and now I am delighted to say that I am
back to 94% free space. Thank you so-o-o-o-o much!!
