access denied

I

Ian Winter

I have three computers networked at home. Two are hard wired through the
router and the other (a Laptop) is using a wireless connection. All
worked fine, but suddenly I am having problems accessing/transfeting
files to and from thelaptop. I get an "access denied" error. I tryed
hooking the laptop via/hard wire and i get the same error. When I
checked the file sharing of the folder in question, the file sharing
check is checked but I do not seem to be able to change that. I am loged
in as administrator. Not sure if that has anything to do to it. Hopefuly
someone can help.

Ian,

With "access denied" for no known reason (like you haven't changed file sharing
permissions or firewall setup have you?), on a wireless LAN, a browser conflict
is a good possibility:

Or look in depth for the problem:

And Ian, posting your email address openly will get you more unwanted email,

As a follow up, when I try to access my laptop from one of the desk top
computers I get an error saying \\laptop\ my documents is not
accessable. you may not have permission to use network resources....

Ian,

If not a firewall or permissions setup problem, that's perfectly consistent with
a browser conflict.

show up. Then when i click on my laptop all the shared folders show. but
if I try to OPEN SAY "MY DOCUMENTS" folder I get the "\\LAPTOP\MY
DOCUMENTS IS NOT ACCESSIBLE. YOU MIGHT MOT HAVE PERMISSION....

Is this another issue or related to a browser conflict.

Browstat and IPConfig are most useful when run from multiple computers - the
more diagnostics we can work from the better.

Ian,

The simple answer to all this seeing you have done all that and nothing has
helped is simply to use system restore to go back to a day BEFORE all this
started *IF* your firewall isn't interfering with anything. If you have the
firewall OFF and all this is still happening, then use system restore.

Ian,

Maybe the browstat logs (coming soon, right?) will provide a clue. Nothing of
interest on the IPConfigs for HPLaptop or IANSDELL - both are getting DHCP
addresses from the router. Node types are OK. No gratuitous protocols
identified.

OK, Ian.

So far, I've seen 2 ipconfigs and 3 browstats. You don't have:
- Browser conflict - all 3 computers acknowledge IansDell as master browser.
- Gratuitous protocols.
- Node type problems (at least from the 2 ipconfigs) - Hybrid and Unknown are
both good.

Check for firewall problems.

And if you provide ipconfig from the third computer (since you got "cmd"
working), we can enumerate your symptoms.
