I installed Win XP 2006 over a previous Win XP SP2 at first using upgrade
mode. However something went wrong and installation failed initially. I had
been cleaning directories previously and suspect that I may have deleted
files that may have been part of windows. This could have been the cause of
the installation problems.
Subsequently I could only install Win XP using the destructive install with
the "leave files unchanged option".
I have two hard disks 120 GB Vol 0 partitions C & D and 80 GB Vol 1
partitions E & F. E & F had backup files created from Windows backup
utlityand were used as backup destination for information on C & D.
Previous XP and program files were installed on C:.I installed new version
on D: to try and ensure that files on C: were not deleted.
Installation apparently deleted all fies on C: and changed the Drive letters
of the drives which was totally unexpected.
Now drive C: has about 15 GB of hidden files awhich do not appear as
accessible and their presence is only evident from the drive properties pie
chart.
One of my backup files of 15 GB was still evident and appears to be intact.
I tried a trial restoration of one 200 kB file and after it recreated the
directory string to the file, the file was not visible it displayed 0 kB and
windows explorer gave the message "access denied".
I am using same user names and passwords as previously and have authority of
administrator.
How can I safely restore my back-up files?
When a full restore operation is performed, does the back-up file remain?
