Access Denied on Windows XP Home. Can`t get my files from my old H

I built a new system due to a MOBO failure and I used the method to take
ownership of the folder by booting into safe mode and I could see the files I
needed then on the old drive , but then I re-booted thinking this "ownership"
change would work in a full regular boot so I could transfer the files (to
the new drive) but it didn`t work. Now my computer won`t boot into safe mode
any more , just a quick BSOD right after I select safe mode. Any ideas what
is causing this ? I really need my files as I can`t find my "backup" DVD I
had made of them.

More info as follows. Intel-based system (C2D) , XP Home SP3 from a clean
install.

Permissions stay whether you are in Safe Mode or Regular Mode. Something
else is wrong and I would suspect that the old hard drive is failing. You
didn't say how you connected the old drive, but it sounds like you attached
it internally. Sometimes XP will not want to boot with a damaged hard drive
connected.

Put the old hard drive in a USB external enclosure. Boot the new system
without the enclosure attached. Once Windows is up and running, attach the
enclosure and copy your files off. If Windows doesn't boot properly without
the old drive connected, you have hardware issues with the new system you
built and should troubleshoot accordingly.

If Windows runs OK but freezes/crashes when you are trying to get files off
the old drive in the enclosure, the old drive has physically failed.

What I ended up doing was re-installing Win XP on the old drive and booting
into safe mode to take ownership of the files and it worked. I then just sent
the files to my new drive. MSFT claims you may lose data files by
re-installing over an old install of Wiindows , but it worked. The old drive
with the clean install of XP was a test for me as it booted into safe mode ,
no BSOD , all with the same hardware. Now that I have Win XP on my newer HDD
, it boots and runs fine EXCEPT when trying safe mode ! What in the world
would be causing this ? Seems as though I may need to re-install XP again to
get safe mode to work. BTW...kudos to MSFT as they re-registered my copy of
XP on my new hardware...I just picked the "significant hardware changes"
option and all is good and legal.

Part of the problem is that you attempted a previously installed os boot , on
new hardware without doing a repair install first to get the new drivers,
usually this causes problems.
once you newly installed the OS those driver issues were resolved, not sure
why the old disk booted after that, it shouldn't have.

I suggest you get acronis True image for making images/clones of your OS hd,
saves lots of hair tearing, and I haven't got much left, so I like to save as
much as I can.
