Access Denied Error

I am having trouble with this one network setup that I have which I never
encountered before. I normally can figure out what to do but this one has me
running around in circles. Anyway, I have a small business/home network that
has three computers hooked up.

The first one is a PC that serves as the server and is running Windows XP
Pro SP1.
It has an old Norton anti virus 2003 which will expire soon.
The firewall is disabled.
IP is 192.168.0.100
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway & DNS just zeroes

The second is a PC also and is running Windows HP Home.
THe firewall is disabled also
IP is 192.168.0.101
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway & DNS just zeroes also

These first two computers are both running well on the network.

The third system is a laptop with Windows XP Pro SP2
The firewall is disabled also
I uninstalled the anti virus just to make sure
IP is 192.168.0.102
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway & DNS just zeroes also.

All systems are wired and plugs into an SMC Hub. The problem with the
laptop was intermittent at first but now it cannot totally locate the
network. Since they are all on the same workgroup which is MSHOME I am able
to see the laptop on the network neighborhood and not the other two.

I have tested the hub and even replaced it. I have tested the cable,
recrimped, and even use a new manufactured one.

It used to give me access denied error when I click "View workgroup
computers" now it just shows me the laptop as the only computer on the
network.

I also don't think it's the browser since I tried mapping directly to the
shared drives and tried connecting to the shared printers without success.

Joel,

One of the most common causes of this problem would be a misconfigured or
overlooked personal firewall, or other security component. Disabling personal
firewalls doesn't always accomplish anything. There are several other
possibilities too, and any might be the cause of your problem. Read this article
with an open mind.

Also, some antivirus products contains components that act like firewalls.

You might want to look at "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, and diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and
follow instructions precisely (download browstat!):

And make sure that NetBT is consistently set on all computers.

Try connecting froma commandprompt with

net use h: \\server\share /user:username

This might give a better indication of the problem.

Also try pinging the server, by IP and by name.

BTW, have any paswwords been changed? It may be that someone has
inadvertently changed the password for the accounts under which the files
were being shared, not realising that this doesn't just affect the local
user.

Actually I got it to work today. The problem was the wireless network card
on the laptop. Apparently it's getting an unsecured signal from within the
building and the wireless router is automatically assigning the IP address to
my wireless card. The IP that it is assigning is the same as my IP on the
server, hence the connection problem.

I do have a new and weird problem. When I disable the Wireless Network
Card, the system works with no problems. Since I cannot change the settings
on the wireless router that is providing the signal, I decided to change the
IP on the server.

Here are the new problems. With original configuration as previously
posted. When I change the IP on the server, it works fine and connects with
no problem with the second computer but not to the laptop. When I changed
the IP on the second computer nothing works. Obviously nothing works also
when I change the IP on the laptop (third computer).

As it turn out, I have to keep my existing network settings with the
wireless card on the laptop disabled for all systems to work. I really don't
want to disable the laptop wireless card. Is there a solution to this? Does
my post make sense?
Did I miss anything?
 
Hi Joel,

If you don't want your wireless card on your laptop to automatically conect
to your neighbours router/access point.

Open your wireless adapter properties panel, goto Wireless Networks tab and
click on Advanced at the bottom right corner. On the next windows unchek the
option that reads "Automatically connect to non prefered networks". You might
also want to remove unwanted networks from your prefered networks section
under the wireless networks tab.
