Access DB won't open on new XP Machine

I just recently purchased a new XP Pro SP2 machine for a user. She was
switching over from a one year old Win2k SP4 machine. To ease the
transition, I gave her a roaming profile, then hooked up the new
machine and she logged on fine. She is an administrator on the local
machine only, and on the old win2k machine was an authenticated user as
a member of the local administrators group. All seems well except for
Access 2000. When she tries to open a file, either from a shortcut, or
by opening Access and then going to File > Open, Access just sits
there. This is a password protected database, so I expect to see the
prompt for the password but do not.

When she logs on to a Win2k terminal server, she can open the database
just fine. For what it's worth, she cannot open any access db file I
try to open on the XP machine. I've uninstalled the access component
from Office 2000 and reinstalled all access components but no luck. I
uninstalled the entire office 2000 suite and reinstalled and still
cannot open any database. Access opens fine, just not a database. If
I log on as a domain administrator, I can open the file no problem (of
course).

If she logs on to another fairly recent XP Pro SP2 machine, she can
open the file fine, and on that machine she is not an administrator.

Interestingly enough if I go into Administrative tools in Control
Panel, I see no icons. I can open event viewer from the command line,
but don't see anything unusual. I ran a sfc /scannow and the scan did
appear to need my XP install cd three times (on a two day old
installation??). All antivirus is up to date and was the first thing
installed on this machine so there are no problems there. All Office
updates were done from online update, all windows updates are current
on both XP machines I've tried with the exception this particular users
machine is having problems with a Flash update for whatever reason.

What am I missing? I'm about ready to bang my head against the wall!

Thanks for any leads-

1. Just a WAG, try shutting down the AV program and starting up the
database. If that works, you'll need to edit the AV definitions.
2. Copy the system.mdw file from the system32 folder of a working machine.
Rename and replace the one on the non-working machine.
3. Make sure she has Modify permissions on the folder where the database is
located.
4. I've heard that sacrificing a chicken sometimes helps.

Thanks for the tips Arvin, I'll give them a shot. I'm thinking #4
might be in the works sometime this weekend.

Ok, I think the problem is solved. These are the steps I went through
in the event anyone else has a similar problem. The folder in question
was already owned by the user, but I gave permissions to the subfolder
which housed the database file. Once I did that,I noticed a rather
peculiar problem when I tried to click on the shortcut to the database.
I would instantly lose conection to the mapped drive the database was
on. Well, actually, I could see some of the files, but not all
(inlcuding the DB). I rebooted the machine, unloaded the antivirus and
then clicked on the shortcut. The DB now came up correctly. I then
logged off, and logged back on, clicked on the shortcut (AV now running
again) and the same loss of conectivity appeared. I then uninstalled
the AV completely and rebooted. Upon logging in the DB worked fine. I
installed the AV, clicked on the shortcut and lost conectivity again.
At this point I decided to go to the command line and checked my net
use statements. I noticed two connections to the same share. I
disconnected both of them, then did a net use s: \\server\share
/persistent:yes, rebooted and the DB seems to now work correctly even
with AV running.

I'm glad it's working but why would the simple act of clicking on the
shortcut (and only that shortcut, clicking on other shortcuts to the
same mapped drive worked fine) disconnect part of my share?

Best-
Brian
