Access 97 cannot open a file created in Access 2000.
Access 2000 can open a file created in Access 97. You can edit the data, but
you cannot modify the forms or reports.
Alternatively, you can convert the Access 97 database to 2000 format and
change it in any way you wish. However, you will no longer be able to use it
in Access 97.
For more information on the issues involved with converting, see:
Converting from Access 97 to 2000 and later
at: http://allenbrowne.com/ser-48.html
You can't open an Access 2000 (A2K) database file in Access 97; it is a
different file format. If you try, Access 97 with an "Unrecognized Database
Format" message box.
You can open an Access 97 in A2K. A2K will ask if you want to convert to
A2K format. You can use the Access 97 MDB in A2K but you can't make any
changes to database objects. If you do convert the format to the A2K
format, save the converted MDB with a different name ... don't overwrite the
original. You can convert it back to Access 97 format from A2K if needed.
Microsoft has included upward compatability ... you can always open a MDB
created in an earlier version in a later version, but you can't open a later
MDB version (or ACCMDB in Access 2007) in an earlier Access version.
Microsoft has a nasty habit of changing the file format of it's MDB files as
new versions are released. With A2K7 they have changed the file name
extension! You always have the option to back convert the MDB to an earlier
version of Access (but not 2.0)
