Access 97 new query wizard

Alynn Baker

I still use Access 97 most of the time. Something happened to my computer
(dell 8250 under XP home) a few weeks ago and I had to reinstall some other
things.Since then, when I want to create a query, for example, using the
simple query wizard, the program crashes and asks me to send error data to
Microsoft. I can create the query manually. The other wizard for a report
doesn't work either

If I copy the database to another computer, it works perfectly. Wizards in
Office XP's Word works as well. So it is just Access 97 that won't work.

Aside from switching to a newer Access (which I am slowly doing on our half
dozen personal computers!), any suggestions for fixing the problem?

Note also - At the same time this started, my AOL program stopped working.
Whether I use dialup or my cable modem, if I start AOL it says it will
download files needed to make AOL run but nothing happens. However my cable
modem works and even Netzero works both on dialup and the cable modem. It
seems to be restricted to AOL only. I don't know if this is related to the
Access problem.

TIA

Hi Alynn,

Try replacing three files on your hard drive, Acwzmain.mde, Acwzlib.mde and Acwztool.mde, using
the following instructions. One or more of these files may have become corrupted (see
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=303769 ). Although this article is written for Access 2000, I
pretty sure the instructions apply to Access 97 as well.

Do the following steps without Access running.

1.. Insert the Microsoft Office or Access compact disc.
2.. By using Windows Explorer, open the Pfiles\Msoffice\Office\1033 folder on your CD-ROM or
DVD-ROM drive, and locate the Acwzmain.mde, Acwzlib.mde and Acwztool.mde files.
3.. Select these files, and then click Copy on the Edit menu
4.. Open the folder that you installed Office into. The default folder is C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Office. Select the Office\1033 folder, and then on the Edit menu, click Paste.

If that doesn't fix the problem, my next guess is an improperly registered Accwiz.dll and/or
DAO360.dll file(s). Use the directions in steps 4 & 5 to re-register these .DLL files.

I do not have that folder on my Access97 CD. I installed the 2000 version
and it IS WORKING for me but 97 is not. I will probably have to convert all
our computers and laptops to use the 2000 version instead of 97. Not really
a big deal except for one old laptop.

Thanks for the try, though.

I'll try your first suggestion. But if that doesn't work, I think I'll
convert to Access2000 and put that version on all our computers. all that
un- and re-installing is more work that I want to do. I am fortunate that my
father upgraded to AccessXP and I have his older (2000) CD.

Thanks.

Hi Alynn,

I think I found the correct files on my Office 97 CD. They have slightly different names versus
the Office 2000/2002 wizards. They are:

wzmain80.mde
wzlib80.mde and
wztool80.mde

Try searching your CD installation disk for these files. I found them in the E:\Office folder,
where E:\ is my CD drive. Then search your C:\ drive for the same three files. Copy the three
files from the CD and replace the three that you found on your C:\ drive. Do this without Access
running.
