Access 97 Date function error message

When we are running queries or macros using either the (Date) or (Cdate)
functions we get the following error message:

The funciton you entered cant be used in this expression

We just recently started getting this error message on newly imaged
machines, so the function is working on 90% of the machine, but the 10% of
the machines that are not working are newly imaged, thats the main
difference. And yes we know we should probably be working with a newer
version of access, just looking for some advice?????
