Hello,

First a word of warning, I am a complete noob when dealing with databases
and Access, so please bear with me.

I am having a problem with a new install of Access 2003 running on Vista.
Once installed I attempted to open and then update a database I use
frequently, and after appearing to run for a moment it stated "Not
Responding". I had this problem before when running on XP and found it was an
issue with my wireless connection flaking out while updating, so I simply
tried again thinking it was a one-off. Unfortunately, it crashes every single
time I attempt to update or rebuild the database. I have tried with multiple
databases, both wireless and landline, and the result is the same: crash.
Thinking the problem may be that I am running 2003 on a Vista machine, I went
and purchased Office 2007and upgraded. It still crashes!! I think it might be
an issue with my internet security settings but honestly have no idea, and
wouldn't know where to start in Vista to fiddle with them.

Does anyone have an idea as to why this is happening and how I can fix it?

MANY people have reported problems accessing an Access back-end over a
wireless connection. Access is VERY sensitive to momentary hiccups in
the network continuity. My advice: don't go there. A terminal server
solution would be much better.

This probably has little or nothing to do with your version of Access
or Windows.

Thanks for the response. I know that a wireless connection can be an issue,
but I have tried both wireless and landline and had the same result. I am
wondering if it might be a blocked port in Vista or some other "security"
setting that I am unaware of?

If you think you cannot connect to the back-end becasue of security
settings, you should first test that out. Can you see that folder? Can
you create a text file in that folder. Can you delete that text file.
If any of your answers are NO, you need to follow up in a Vista or
Networking related newsgroup.

I disagree.

You don't need a terminal session.

You need SQL Server and Access Data Projects
It is a _FREE_ architecture.

Moving to terminal sessions is the worst reccomendation ever-- it can
cost $10,000 before you allow the first terminal session

Honestly-- just because you've only got a hammer-- that doesn't mean
that everythign is a nail.
If your piece of shit database doesn't work on Wireless or VPN or the
public internet-- than move to a real database.

Stop making excuses for MDB _CRAP_ kid.

Why should they have to deal with Access security in _TWELVE_
different places?

landline-- are you talking about dialup? lol

Access MDB really is _NOT_ reliable enough for real world usage.
You've already spent more time on this thread-- then it would take you
to move to SQL Server.

SQL Server is the reccomended route to go for all new and existing
databases.

Thanks & Good luck

Aaron,

Your life's work of contributions to Access forums can be replaced by two
lines of code that just repeats "don't use Access. " I was going to be
upset for people who keep reading that stuff, but they can take solace in
the fact that it could be worse, they could be you who is wasting his life
writing hundreds of content-free posts.

I put more valuable content than anyone else on this newsgroup.

I've been published with over 200,000 people using my code.

Thanks

go and play with your midget-sized database.

My databases scale and they take no longer to write.
Sorry that you listen to these 70 year olds and retards that say 'oh
it's too complex'
