I have a 45MB MDB file that is used in my business for running our
operations. We have run the same file and system now for 3 years with no
problems. We automatically run the compact/repair tool every day to keep
things healthy.

However, when we run it now (since last wee), its bloated the file size to
95MB and growing... it repairs fine, but hangs in the compact, and the
little progress bar hangs mid way though the compact. It does however
create a new file in the process called db1.mdb, which has the same problem.

Basically I think its got an error in its audit files or similar somewhere.

Any advice on how I can deal with this? I've tried the MS jet reapir tool,
which didnt work.

help much appreciated!

Adrian,

Another thing to try is to make new, blank database file and import all
objects from the old one, then add any references or change default
settings as required, as per the original file. There's a good chance
the new, clean copy will be problem-free.

Thanks, I hadnt thought of that one, but when I try it, I have to manually
import every individual table, query, form etc (over 100). is there a way
of doing this in one go?

The import wizard allows you to do it all in one go; just select each
tab (object type) and click on Select All for each.

I am having this same problem...my 40 mb database has swollen to 166 mb and
although it sometimes completes the compact, the size does not ever get
smaller! Since the database has security and must be launched from a
shortcut using a secure .mdw file, when I try to import objects from it into
a new database, I get an error that I don't have permission. Would it be the
same to "export" from the big database? If so, is there a way to export more
than one object at a time??
Thanks!!

Susan,

I guess the export would have the same effect (haven't tried it), but I
don't know of a way to do a "mass" export. I suspect there must be a way
to import from a secured database, but aren't very knowledgeable on the
subject myself. I would suggest you start a new thread titled "Importing
form a secured mdb" or something along these lines, so you stand much
better chances of getting some good advice, compared to a question five
levels down another post, as the case is here.

HTH,
Nikos
