Access 2000 database Slooowwwww

I have an Access 2000 database. It has been running slow ever since it had
some design changes completed in Access 2000 running on Windows XP. To fix
this problem we have converted the database to Access 97 and then back upto
Access 2000. The database performance has improved signigicantly and the
database is also about 4MB less in size. I am not to sure what has caused
these improvements, as the database was regularly compacted, repaired and the
code compiled. Does anyone have some suggestions ?
