Access 2000 and 2007

I have two XP computers on a peer to peer network running Access 2000. This
works OK, although I am suffering increasing problems of the system freezing
when creating an invoice. I then do Ctrl/Alt Del to close Access, and it
works after 2 or 3 tries.

I now need to upgrade as I have to be able to export to XML, and 2000 does
not appear to support this.

It seems that it would be a good time to upgrade to, say, two Dell Vostro
220 Mini Towers, with Office Professional 2007. I see that there is an option
to have Vista Business with XP Professional. Can anyone advise whether this
is a good way to go? Presumably it would be a good idea to install both
Access 2007 and 2000?

Would extra RAM and/or hard disc capacity speed up operations such as
creating an invoice and producing a report which calculates percentages?

Thanks for any help.

To stop the problem with freezing and such, you may want to consider setting
up a network computer and ditching the peer-to-peer. That should help with
performance issues also. Something like a Dell PowerEdge T105.

If you need to go with 2007 for XML, I would only install it and not Access
2000 also. Assuming that you don't have a hardward problem, you may be able
to get a cheap upgrade from Office Pro 2000 to Office Pro 2007. If you thing
the freezing is due to hardware or OS issues, I'd recommend both the new PCs
and a small server.

Thanks for your very helpful reply. I have never used a server system, and I
am not clear how it would work. The Poweredge costs 199 UK GBP, but this is
with no operating system, and adding Windows Server 2008 would cost an
additional 505 GBP, which would make it much more expensive than a peer to
peer. Would I need to pay this?

I also see that the Vostro comes with an option to add Office Professional
for 179 GBP, which is cheaper than many third party upgrade offers, but there
is no such option with the Poweredge. Can I buy one copy of Office only, and
where would I install it?

Do I need to upgrade the Vostros from Vista Home Basic (included in the
price) to Vista Business with XP Professional, available for 60 GBP?

Thanks
