Yes, you do. At Australia's Harvey Norman for example, you fill out a form
to get a academic version

Very few retailers check, and MS really doesn't care. MS's started
flooding the retail market with academic versions with Office XP,
because of it's lackluster retail sales for the full retail product.

You got that right. Wal-Marts here always seem to stock about 10 academic
versions of Microsoft products for every 1 regular copy, and they never ask
anyone for a student ID
