About USB Speeds

hello,

I have been trying to research
a question but to no avail.

I am curious as to how usb
speeds function in vista.

firstly, it is understood that
usb 2.0 is fully functional
in vista.

however, can vista still
support usb1.0 devices?

is there a method to have
vista control the usb speed.

for example if the usb port
is 2.0, then can we reduce
the speed to 1.0?

lastly, has the 2.0 standard
been increased or made
more efficient by vista?

it seems that I have seen
usb devices be marketed
as something being able
to handle faster speeds
than 2.0.

but as marketing goes, it
may simply be "spin" on
the products.

Vista supports both USB 1.x and 2.0 devices.
A 1.x device connected to a 2.0 port will just run at normal 1.x speed etc.

ok, well thanks for the
quick and simple answer.

but, that's what I initially
thought until I discovered
that it was not true with a
device I had.

I had wondered if there is a
situation that vista cannot
recognize 1.0 speeds, thus
leading me to further wonder
if there was a manual method
to ensure a reduced speed,

similar to setting the bit rate
for those ol' internet modems.

-----------------

thanks for you quick
and professional response!

perhaps, I need to
re think the issue.

The device may be broken or incompatible.

Nope, it supports all the speeds. The external device may be non-compliant
in some way, or broken, if it is not responding properly.

What exactly is the problem with it?

thanks to both of you
above for the time
in responding.

I had found a solution
a few days ago, but I
have been searching
to find if it is a documented
solution or I happened to
make a new discovery.

thus my general inquiries
about the usb system in
vista.

the problem was basically
a driver incompatibility issue
and vista simply refused
to install the driver.

also, the manufacturer
did not want to provide
a driver for the device
for vista.

so many of us were left
with a very expensive device
and no support by the
manufacturer for those of
us who upgraded to vista.

however, I discovered
a work around and the
device if now fully
functional in vista now.

with the work around vista
then automatically recognized
that device and installed the
driver for it as well - the same
winxp driver that it initially refused
to accept.

at this time I have sent an
email to the manufacturer
generally advising them of
a solution I found and with out
describing the exact methodology.

I'm not sure if I can ascertain
any benefits from the discovery,
but most assuredly their customers
will, if they know the steps necessary
to make their device(s) functional in
vista.

in any case, thanks for your time
and input.

the additional information you
guys provided were helpful.

Thanks for not sharing what your work around was.

Check out; (if not already)

10. How does a USB hub slow down devices?
