I attempted to upgrade from win98 to win2000. I was not
able to complete win2000 upgrade due to software /
hardware conflicts, etc. Fine. Upgrade cancelled till
further notice. Done but not gone.

Now I get the Win2000 safe mode screen options when
attempting to use win98 in safe mode.

I guess I have some win2000 tracks from the attempted
upgrade. How do I remove this in case I do need to use
win98 in safe mode?

Also, I am wondering if the failed win2000 upgrade may
have caused some corruption impacting hardware or software
performance.

Upgrades require a procedure. You need to back up data, consult the Hardware
Compatibility List, check for a bios update and run "winnt32
/checkupgradeonly" as well as complete the steps indicated by the resulting
log file.

When you don't follow these steps, the recommended action upon failure is to
backup documents, format and try a clean install if hardware supports it.
You can start troubleshooting and patching this or that if you like, but
eventually you'll realize that the attempt failed and that an upgrade is
usually a bad idea anyways.

There is or was a compatibility check for upgrading from Win 98 to 2000. I even think it is on the Windows 2000 CD-ROM. That should have been run CB is correct a reinstall may be necessary. You can actually just install Windows 2000 on a blank drive. Start the install of Windows 2000 and when it asks for a qualifying product remove the Windows 2000 CD-ROM insert the Windows 98 CD-ROM and once found and accepted replace with the Windows 2000 CD-ROM and proceed. You can even do this if the harddrive has stuff on it.
