it was written in word. and will i keep the same formattig...thank you

What are you trying to do here?
You can save the document as plain text from Word, which is what a *.txt
file is supposed to be, but plain text does not support text formatting.
If for some reason unclear you simply wish to change the extension to txt
then you can do that in Windows Explorer. It will still be a Word document
so you don't appear to achieve anything by doing so.

Unless he's trying to email it and get around a filter on .doc files.

In that case zipping would be a better option.

Thank you for your response.i am trying to set up a web page. i am new to
this. The program i am using 'web creator' only lets me import text that is
..txt or .rtf. I am using WORD from 1996. However i have windows xp.
perhaps changing it to .rtf would be better as i just found out it would keep
the formatting. how can i do this in windows xp?
thank you very much

Open the document with Word. Click on "File" then "Save as". In the "Save as
type" drop-down menu, choose "Rich text format".

Some systems block .zip files as well. <sigh>
