A8V deluxe problems

I really dont know where to start lol

I was trying to build a computer and after some research i ended up
getting this board to be put in use with my radeon 9700pro and boy,
did i know what was to come in the next few days

the first bump i came accross was getting my SATA drive recognized,
but thats a normal thing and fixed easily with a floppy disk and
drivers.

from there the computer worked fine while getting the drivers/windows
update installs untill i actually got into putting some heat on the
video card. . . played a video and the computer locked dead with
annoying noice coming out of the speakers.

ok, so i shut down and restart and go to play my favorite game. . .
same lock up within 5min of playtime.

so i research and find out theres major problems with the
9600/9700/9800 on that board, but people were providing all sorts of
fixes for it. . . alright, so i tried agp 4x, then disabling fast
write, then uping the power, then some registry fix. . . i was at it
all night trying all those fixes in diff combinations with all the
bios versions i could get my hands on with no result what so ever.
it actually cept getting worse the more i was using the computer, it
would start locking up even when i am in bios looking up settings to
the point i couldnt even start up the computer anymore.

well at this point i am really pissed so i go to bestbuy and get a
6600gt. took me some time to figure out why my computer wont boot up
but after flashing bios like 10 times and trying all posible ram
combinations on the slots i got it to boot up, put the 6600gt but it
locked up not even 10 min after that (was done installing nvidia
drivers and was just browsing through the properties)

alright, its probably a windows problem so i reformat. things are
looking brighter now. i got all my drivers installed and listening
to music and watching videos with no problem till i started up a
game. . . locked up within 5 min. . .

At this point i am about to kill someone, so i restart and try the
same fixes for the ati (aka 4x agp, no fast writing etc etc anything
relevant) to no end. cant play games with the 6600 and cant even
keep my computer up for more then 5 min with the 9700pro.

and on top of all that, my 3200 400 ram is recognized as 200mhz ram
and runs at 166 no mater how many sticks i put in.

this motherboard is SOOO problematic that i have a hard time believing
it

Please someone tell me i am doing something wrong before i go choke
some ASUS guy to death

Hello, I Have had lockup probs with this board too.

System.
ASUS A8V Deluxe rev.2 Bios 1009
KingstonKVR400x64C3a/512 x2=1GB
Athlon 3500(winchester core)
Radeon 9800 Pro(ATI)
Maxter 80gig

My system would lockup and or reboot during game play.
After trying everything I read about on the net,
I requested info from ATI.
After reading the "Game fix tech papers"
A suggestion was to raise the AGP voltage from 1.5v to 1.6v.
This FIXED the reboot and lockup prob.
Been running 2 days with no probs.

Download WinDiag from microsoft if you can on another computer and make a
boot disk for it.
Run this ram checker on your system for an hour or so.

Think it's this link:
oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

Thanks,

If you read my initial post youll find out that ive tried all those
fixes and they dont seem to work with neither the 9700 or the 6600.

The thing is that even after a full reset and reformat it would still
lock up on me even durring bios or DOS with nothing but the
motherboard, a stick of ram, either of the video cards i have and
with either the old bios the board came with or the 1009 or the
beta.

the video cards/ram/PSU work perfect on my old intel board so its
defentetly a board issue.

anyway, i think ive had enough of this, i am giving up and getting a
PCI exress ABIT or GIGABYTE and exchanging the 6600gt for a BFG pci
express.

if the lock ups were just durring heavy gaming i would assume it would
be fixable but if it even locks up durring the damn BIOS thats a board
with major issies in my book.

i have a feeling that with a new board all those problems are just
magically gonna disapere even without any stupid fixes that just
cripple your machine.

ive run memtest, it reports 166mhz (ddr333) on dual and 166mhz
(ddr200) i think on a single stick.

what is your power supply? I'm guessing you have too small a box, or you
haven't used a 12v connector as well as the standard 3v.

Bob Knowlden

I have an A8V (Rev 2) with a 3500+ (Newcastle), and I haven't had much
trouble with it. (There was an embarrassing incident with the latest Via IDE
drivers, but I've gotten rid of those.)

I thought that your problem might be using 4 DIMMs, but I see that Asus
lists your Corsair memory as suitable for installation in all 4 slots. (If
you read the FAQs at Asus, you'll see that the board automatically switches
to DDR333 when all 4 DIMM sockets are populated. The work-around is to go to
manual settings, but that's not guaranteed to be stable.) I recommend using
manual settings regardless, even if you are only using 2 DIMMs. (I'm using 2
DIMMs of unmatched PC3200.)

The Thermaltake power supply isn't the best possible 480W one out there: it
produces a maximum of 18A on the +12V line. That may be adequate, though. (I
upgraded to a Tagan PS: 28A on +12V, even though it's another nominal 480 W
supply. I was a bit worried about loading, as I have a 6800GT graphics card
run at 400/1100 MHz.)

Have you run the Asus Probe software to monitor temperatures? Lockups after
10 minutes sounds like an overheating problem. For stress testing, I
recommend CPUBurn4 (http://pages.sbcglobal.net/redelm/cpuburn4.zip). That's
for the CPU only; if you wish to clobber the graphics card as well, try
http://www.daionet.gr.jp/~masa/rthdribl/.

The only persistent problem I have is the occasional cold boot failure.
(It's more of an annoyance than a real problem.) It happens less often with
the BIOS I'm using now (1010 beta 3) than with some older ones, but it
hasn't gone away altogether.

I hope that you haven't got a dud mainboard. I've been pleased with Asus
products, but I doubt that their QC is 100%. (99.9% would be pretty good,
unless you're the unlucky one in 1000.)

Good luck.

PSU is in my specs.

Whats the satandard 3v connector?

A friend has the same PSU with an MSI board with the same CPU running
4 harddraves and 6800 ultra with no problem.
I have thought that the PSU could be the problem but after unplugging
all the drives and fans it still locks up.

someone asked if i had installed asus probe. . Yes i installed it, i
have a LL case with 4 fans and the temp hardly ever goes over 40-45
on max load, at low 30s idling and the board is always at 27-28C (not
overcloaking since i cant even get it to work as is)

Anyway, getting a DFI nf4 tomorrow and we'll see how that goes. . .

Thx for the replies

Bob, what's that all about? I'm running the same combo with
two SATA and one IDE, and I haven't had any embarrassing
incidents - at least, I don't think I have!

Hi, the problem with the via accelerator drivers is well documented on my
forums, all of the versions have given file corruption of some kind....
