A8N-SLI Premium Restart Problem

Anyone seen a problem like this, new system per specs below?? Upon any soft
boot or restart, the system will not reboot...just a blank screen on the
LCD. Started as soon as I started installing XP Pro when it has to start
the reboots.

Asus A8N-SLI Premium
4GB OCX Platinum DDR400
Evga 7800 GTX PCIe
1 74GB WD Raptor - SATA
2 400GB Seagate 7200 Barracudas - SATA
Antec NeoPower 480W PS
Plextor 740 DVD burner
Creative Labs Audigy 2 ZS
Windows XP Pro

Removed 2 sticks of the ram to eliminate that as a problem, but to no avail.
I think the mobo may be bad but this is getting ridiculous. This is now my
7th bad Asus board I've had in the past year!! All the others were P4 boards
however, but Asus' QC is really beginning to suck.

Just curious if anyone else had this or a similar problem.

Thanks,
Steve

So some driver is dying with an error, as WinXP is shutting down ?

Have you checked the Event Viewer ?

Also, strip the system down, like maybe start by removing the Audigy.
Maybe you'll narrow down the problem that way.

If the board boots from a cold start, then that means the motherboard
can work properly. A restart requires a "clean" shutdown, before
the machine can actually POST again.

If you need a second opinion, install an alternate OS and see if
it behaves properly. That might help distinguish between software
problems and hardware problems.

You might try a few different Nvidia driver versions, and
see if the symptoms change or not. The 7800GTX has not been
around for very long...

I had turned on CD NOW as well as power up by keyboard space key.
After that, a cold reboot would reset the pc, post, then a black
screen.

I wanted boot by space bar more than CD NOW so I disabled CD NOW and
the problem went away. I also was in the middle of doing a new
install and installed all the updated drivers from asus's site and XP
drivers. But I think in my case it was having CD NOW and boot by
space both on at the same time.

Also, the NForce HW firewall sucks. I removed it and used the other
NIC.

It's a motherboard function, making the CDrom drive available to play
music without having to boot into an operating system - so you can play
music on the drive without having to wait for Windows (or any other OS)
to load.
