A7V8X-X and Soundblaster Live!

B

Bert

Hi,

I want to use a SoundBlaster Live! PCI card with my
A7V8X-X mainboard. But I can't.
When installing Windows XP Pro (slipstreamed SP2) the setup
locks up after a couple of minutes.
So I installed without the soundcard. When adding the
card now, Windows locks up after telling me that it
discoverd new hardware.

What I tried:
- Changing PCI-slots.
- Disabling on-board sound in the BIOS
- Flashing the mainboard to te newest firmware.

Any ideas?

TIA

prolly your best bit is to do as youve done (xp install minus the SB), then
insert card, cancel anything XP suggests in way of driver installation for
it, go to creative and grab latest drivers for the card instead and install
with them.
Failing that, your a7n8x might need additional drivers - check youve
installed all the crap that comes with the board (mobo install CD).
I have an a7n8x using a sblive, so they do work in them - but failing all
that stuff, you might have to resort to using the onboard sound, which isnt
bad imho.

I can't! Windows locks up completely! A balloon appears in the right down
corner wich says that new hardware has been detected. Even the right name
appears in the balloon: Soundblaster Live.
But then the only thing left is the power switch :(

True. But it has no midi-port...

If I was in this situtation i'd boot to safemode, uninstall anything
referencing sound (past installs perhaps?), even check your registry for
TSR's which load during startup. It sounds most likely to be a
driver/software conflict. I think you already said you tried installing the
card in a different PCI slot, but if not try the lowest one - anything near
the AGP slot, sometimes, can be a source of some problems.
Also check your BIOS pci handling/steering is on auto. If no joy, then try
disabling all onboard unneeded devices which use IRQ's such as parallel
port, etc. Basically free up more resources, it could be the cause. Hmm what
else.. Anyway check that out and let us know if any luck.
