A7N8X-X and AGP problem

I have a new A9N8X-X that works fine with a PCI video card but won't
boot with the new video card I bought with the mobo, a Sapphire Radeon
9200SE 64M DDR TVO. I borrowed a friends machine to test the card, and
it works fine in his machine. I tried his video card (a Radeon 8500DV)
in the A7N8X-X and had the same problem. No POST. The cpu fan spins and
the LED is on, but nothing else happens. No beeps. It's dead.

The motherboard is working great with the PCI card. I installed XP with
no problem. I had to install the latest nForce drivers from nVidia's web
site to get it to shut down without a BSOD, but other than that, it's
been fine.

I'm using the setup defaults in the bios. The only setting I changed is
the cpu external frequency. I changed it from 100 to 166 for the Athlon
MP 2500+ I'm using.

The case has a 300 watt power supply. I'm using a single stick of PC3200
ram, 512MB. The only addon card in the machine right now is the video
card. No external hardware is connected. The only other hardware in the
case is a 20MB ide drive, a Plextor IDE CD burner and a floppy drive.

Should I be tweaking some of the AGP settings in the bios setup?

hi:

you may need to update the bios of the motherboard.. I know they have
updated the bios for mb's to "Improve compatibility with ATI VGA cards." I'm
not sure if your model is included.check Asus' webpage for an updated bios.

I just built a system with the A7V8X-X board and could not get it to run
until i flashed to the latest bios.

Hope this helps,

My motherboard has a 1009 bios. The latest on the Asus web site is a
1007 bios. I've thought about re-flashing, but I don't want to go to an
older version. (A7N8X-X, not A7V)

The 1007 version of your bios is the lates one.
i got the same board and an ati video card on and it work fine
i mean it not rebooting my pc or freezing it or else. my card is just
a bit slower than it suppose to be but my game are playable.

once i had some problem with the board, i could'nt set the agp
perforance to 8x in even if in the bios the 8x agp capability was set.

The solution was to un-install the nf2 driver and get it back.

lately a ran into some more problem it something about the usb port
that wont reconnize my pc web cam the d-link dsf 350f

i can get it to work with my usb port, on auther computer the web cam
work fine. any idea??

Thanks for your response.

I have to disagree with you. The latest is 1009. I'm sure now because I
ordered another A7N8X-X (no, it's not an A7V) from Newegg. It has a 1009
bios like the first one.

Like the first one, the new one will not boot with the Sapphire Radeon
9200SE 64M DDR TVO card installed. I don't mean it will not load
Windows. I mean no post. It's fine with an old PCI card I pulled from
the closet.

The Sapphire card works file in 2 other machines, including my aging
A7A266 at home. I installed the latest drivers from the ATI web site and
used it all weekend.

Is anyone else using this board and card? Did you have to change any of
the bios settings to get it to work?

I tried flashing the bios back to 1007, the latest version on the Asus
web site. That didn't help.

Am I looking in the right place for bios updates?
This is the page that shows the latest is 1007:
