a7n8x Rev2 deluxe bios problem

Hi

I cant seem to find a resolution to this problem. If I flash the latest
bios 1008_d for this board it causes the sound to play up badly

I have only tested Sims3

I have the latest drivers etc.

The sound is not scratchy or distorted as I have read elsewhere it seems
to skip and stutter.

I have to revert back to the 1005 bios.

Any Ideas whatthe problem might be?

I have noticed the sounds stutters whenever there is a disk access.

So basically it stutters in time to the disk activity led

The board has an 80G IDE hard drive the drive is using DMA (mode 5) so
its not the drivers for the drive

and my sound(same board/bios) has improved.

I downloaded the latest drivers (last week) from Nvidia. I am not sure if its the same
as the ones in that link. I will download it and compare (the computer I speak of is
at home so i cannot check right now)

I noticed the sound problem 'improved' but it was still quite bad.

I havent tried other games I just reverted back to the 1005 drivers.

I wanted to flash to the latest so I could put in some hynix ram (I believe the bios
fixes problems with that)

I may just stick to the older bios and look for another brand of RAM

I have this mobo, using bios 1008 and default nvidea drivers - from nvidea
site - have never had a problem
The only probs I have had is when I upgraded memory to a 1gb dual 'value'
memory, I had to clock the memory down. I changed memory to crucial 1gb
dual - runs at full spec
Having said that I'm not much into gaming, but I have a couple of gigs of
mp3s and they play fine.

The drivers link has the best drivers for Nvidea boards........it is a
revised mix of drivers.Some are more recent than the 5.10 that are on
the NVidea website,others have added functions.....specifically the
sound and NVMixer applications.

Thanks I'll give that one a try.

I am of the impression the problem may be related to the IDE drivers. which
is why the problem seems to be "in time" with the drive accesses. it does
not seem right but I have little else to go on at this point.

Thanks for the tip on the memory. I was looking at "Value Ram" but it did
concern me that I may have to retard the clock

Interestingly I currently have kingston 2100 value ram OC'd the FSB
150Mhz. Seems to work with no issues on the 1005 BIOS.

The reason I overclocked the RAM was I was unable to get the processor to
run at full speed using the multipliers and 133 FSB

At least now the CPU is reported as running at 2.2Ghz (if I recall
correctly)

Previously everytime I pushed the multiplier passed 12.5 the CPU would
drop down to 800Mhz that was with an FSB of either 133 or 100!

I don't have a clue as to why that was happening

The multiplier is a five bit code. Some motherboards are driving
only the lower four bits. When you want a multiplier above 12.5,
the (undriven) most significant bit of the five bit code, needs to
change states. There is a "wire trick" for the S462 processor socket,
to make the upper multipliers available. Using a switch to connect
the two pins, would give you the best of both worlds (but would
require soldering the switch to the correct two pins on the bottom
of the motherboard).

There are some multiplier tables on this page. If you
want to play "multiplier roulette", I recommend setting
the FSB to 100MHz, so if you get a large multiplier
value by accident, it'll still POST. Once you have a handle
on what BIOS value causes what actual multiplier, then
adjust the FSB to the desired value. (Maybe it just works
fine - I'm only suggesting you play it safe while charting
the multipliers.)

Some people using the NVidea chipset have had better HD performance using
the MS IDE drivers from XP.
You can give that a try.

Which AMD processor are you running??
Are you aware that theAMD "name" does not designate its actual speed ?

The CPU is the AMD barton PR2.4+. its not multiplier locked

If I recall its running at around 1.875Ghz (150*12.5) the OS reports the PR
as 2.2ghz

Sorry can't be more specific the machines at home

Thanks for the tip. I think I'll wait till I can afford some faster ram. my
son wouldn't like me playing with his Mboard and soldering things to it :(
