A7N8X memory question.

Hi all.

I have:

A7N8X Deluxe V2
Athlon 2500+ Barton
2 x 256mb DDR PC3200 Twinmos Dual Channel Kit

I have been told by a retailer that Twinmos memory is not recommended
for NForce 2 or 3 motherboards. In the year since I have had the mb
the voice has reported that "system failed memory test" on many
occasions but the machine boots and runs fine regardless.

Today I upgraded the BIOS to version 1008 and have had no further
voice messages about the failed memory test but it may yet happen.

My questions are:

What is the problem with Twinmos and NForce 2/3?
Have I solved it with the BIOS upgrade?

If I want to upgrade the memory and keep the Dual Channel performance
boost what are my options? Do I have to add a third 256mb chip or can
I add a 512mb chip? How do I ensure I get a matching chip?

Should I ditch the Twinmos Dual Channel Kit and get a new 2 x 512mb
kit? If so what make of memory should I buy for my mb?

Sorry for so many questions. Thanks in advance.

Hi!
I have 2 sticks of Kingston ValueRAM, one 256 (PC2100)and one 512(PC2700)
running at 166MHz (overcloking, yes).
Same mobo, and a barton 3000+ (333).
I experience the same as you. I feel that I do not get the message as much
now after 1.008, just like you.
My system is Prime95 stable and no errors with memtest.
I believe the Asus woman is wrong. How can she find out my RAM is faulty in
1 second, when prime95 cannot?

I've used quite a few brands of memory which didn't make the Asus QVL for
RAM.
Set the two modules up in dual channel config, running at 200MHz, with
11-3-3-2.5 or 11-3-3-3 timings. Run Prime95 for a minimum of 8 hours. If it
doesn't produce any errors in eight hours, you're good to go.

Even if it does error out, it may be something other than RAM. Try it.

The Asus Post Reporter is a fibber. I disabled her after the first few
boots.
