A7N8X Lost DMA on CD drive

I just loaded the NVidia 3.13 drivers. The first time, I let it load
the SW IDE drivers. After I did that, one of my programs couldn't see
the CD and DVD drives, so I re-installed the 3.13s and said no to the
SW IDE driver. After the re-install, I went into Device Manager and
checked the DMA status of all my drives. To my horror, my CD drive was
not installed with DMA but only PIO.

I don't actually know when this might have occurred. The DMA has been
enabled previously, I don't know when it changed. I don't attribute it
to the 3.13s necessarily. I don't see that anyone else has posted
about such a problem with them. I also flashed the BIOS to 1.07
recently, and I have installed all the latest XP updates and ATI
Catalyst updates.

Anyway, I would like to get DMA working again. Any ideas?

Configuration:
A7N8X 1.04 (non-Deluxe) BIOS 1.07
Primary IDE Master 100 GB ATA-100 (DMA is enabled)
Primary IDE Slave 80 GB ATA-100 (DMA is enabled)
Secondary IDE Master 56X CD (DMA is NOT ENABLED)
Secondary IDE Slave Pioneer DVD-RW (DMA is enabled)
ATI Radeon 8500DV Catalyst 4.4
XP Home all updates

Thanks,
Frank

Remove any problem drives from the Device Manager (not disable) and
reboot.

You will need to go into the device manager and delete
the secondary IDE channel then reboot. This should fix
it. I don't know why, but it worked for me and it has
stayed in DMA since. In my case, my DVD-RW changed to
PIO and my DVD ROM stayed in DMA

Secondary IDE slave Lite On DVD ROM

Thanks guys for the suggestions. That did the trick!

I had a weird experience with the 3.13 ATAPI driver. The CD burning
app I use (Recordnow DX 4.6) was seeing the same drive listed twice.
I.e. my DVD player was showing up twice and my CDR was not showing up
at all. If I disabled the DVD player, my CDR would show up twice.
Explorer still listed the drives correctly, though. Removing the
Nvidia ATAPI driver fixed it for me. Maybe Nvidia should stick to
writing graphics drivers.
