Hi,
I have a rev 1.04 A7N8X Deluxe board which has suddenly stopped working.
I've got an enermax 480 watt psu and have checked the voltage rails to rule
it out. Recently, the system has been suddenly shutting down and
restarting. Well, this morning I awoke to find it off and hitting power
button had no effect. I have now removed all cards, and board from case.
Reinstall video, cpu, memory but it still will not post. CPU fan spins for
all of maybe 1 second and then the whole thing shuts back down. Have put
memory in secondary system and it seems to be alright. CPU also tested in
other system and booted fine.
I have not overclocked this system at all and don't know what could have
caused this.
Anyone else think the board has had it or have any other troubleshooting
ideas? I've gotta wait till Monday it seems before I can even get ahold of
them for rma as Asus support is "closed in observance of the holidays" (damn
recordings).

I had a similar thing with an Enermax P/S..had to have everything
disconnected..except for cpu and vid card...all extra fans
unplugged..HD's..CD's..and it booted....put everything back in and was
fine...have had that happen twice....something to do with the thermal
shutdown circuit..

Well, I've gone as far as actually going and getting an Antec True Control
550 powersupply unit and just tried that with the same results. CPU fan
spins for a second -tops - and then nothing. Like I said, everything is
disconnected except cpu, 1 stick of memory, and video card - a Geforce FX
5200. I've also gone and tried with my Radeon 9800XT card since it is
destined to head into the main unit anyhow. BIOS has been reset, battery
replaced after having been removed for 20 minutes and bios jumper shorted
for 30 seconds. Still a no-go :-(
I just hope asus rma doesn't take forever like they did with my last rma
on this board and better yet, I pray they replace it with a rev 2 board
instead of a repaired 1.04, also like last time.

Visually inspect the electrolytic capacitors around the CPU
socket for leakage or swelling. 1.04 is an older board and
could be from the era of substandard caps. Finding a bad
one won't solve the problem but could identify it.

Grant,
Thanks for that bit of info. At least, if Ican visually see that is the
problem, I can argue a bit less with Asus support technician when I call
monday. Perhaps I can somehow convince them to do an advanced rma. Using a
friends machine now just to get on the net until I can load all the
wonderful junk on my second system.
