A7N8X Deluxe/Barton 2800 problems

H

Helen Zass

I just put in a Athlon XP 2800 Barton CPU , did have an 2200 and I'm having
all kinds of problem with stability and booting.

If is set it up like this I have problems
cpu external frequency 166
CPU frequency multiple Auto
Mem Frequency SPD

But if I set the cpu external freq to 133 I can get it to boot but then it
shows a 2200 again. I have the latest bios rev 1007, with 1 gig of ram.
Any ideas why I cant get it to run at the correct speed?

I noticed the problem first when doing a clean install of Win XP Pro, I kept
getting the blue screen saying there was a problem.

Thanks for the help

Do you have a copy of memtest86+ from memtest.org ? You should
always test the memory on a new motherboard before installing
or running an OS. No errors should show up while you are testing,
because if there are errors, that means an installed OS will
eventually crash.

Look in the BIOS and see if you can adjust the memory to run
at the same speed as the FSB of the processor. There is
a bug in the Nforce2 (and I cannot remember whether it is
restricted to single channel or dual channel mode - it is one
but not both of the modes), where memory gets corrupted if
the bus speeds don't match. There should be a setting like
"100%" or the like for memory speed.

Set your memory frequency to 100% rather than SPD.
What type of memory do you have?

If I lower the cpu external frequency to 162 instead of 166 and set the
memory the same then it will boot and run fine, wonder if the chip has a
flaw? I upgraded from a 2200 to 2800 the board is about 1.5 years old with
2 sticks of 256 Samsung memory and 1 stick of pny 512 pc 2700. Thanks

If it is a recent Barton, then it is likely to be multiplier locked at 12.5,
as the XP2800 has a clock speed of 2.083Ghz (166FSB x 12.5).

Asus have a utility that allows you to change your FSB (and memory timings)
from within Windows, so you set the FSB to 162 in the BIOS and then
experiment when you are in Windows.

The ASUS utility will not work with A7N8X, x, dlx.......
only the A7N8X-E/ E dlx and is not meant for normal A7N8X's.

Is all the ram PC2700?
If not then it should be as you can't run 166MHz and 133MHz ram together.
The CPU needs at least 166MHz ram(PC2700)(DDR333)
