I started using the "front panel" usb port and have discovered the system
resets almost each time I plug in a device.

The motherboard has a socket for 2 usb ports. One goes to an internal
6-in-1 memory stick adapter. no problem there ever.

the 2nd one goes to 1/2 of the front panel pair of usb ports. obviously,
only one is being used.

1. A logitech usb mouse works o.k.
2. a "rio 500" mp3 player resets the computer
3. a "classic mp6410" mp3 player resets the computer
the above two mp3 players reset the computer whether they are switched on or
not. ie: even if the 1.5 volt battery is supplying power, a reset of the
a7m266 occurs the instant the usb plug is inserted or connected.
4. A power hub also resets the computer. However, once it boots back up,
the powered hub seems to handle the insertion of the mp3 players o.k. ie: no
reset
Likewise the mp3 players, once the system reboots, they function o.k.

All this seems suspicious. I have other systems that work o.k. Is this to
be expected?

Beemer,
Just a shot in the dark here, but it sounds like a Power Supply
problem. The PS may not be able to provide enough juice to power
the USB. That would be why the powered hub can handle the mp3
players, but not the board. Some USB devices draw more power than
others.
What PS do you have?
