A'64 3700+

Ahh...just a super quick (and probably silly) question...I was going to buy
a 3000+, but suddenly the CPUs at my parts dealer have gone down in
price...I was going to get a 3500+ instead, I've heard it's a good CPU, but
I can now easily afford a 3700+. I can't seem to find much info on it...is
there something bizarrely wrong with this CPU? Or is it just a logical step
up from a 3500+ and a step down from a 3800+?

TIA.

The 3700+ is a 754 pin part with a 1M cache. The 3500+ is a 939 pin part
with a 1/2M cache. The 754s are priced way below the 939s. With 1M of
cache they also run rings around 939s with 1/2M. I have a 3400+ (sames as
a 3700+ except it's 2.2GHz instead of 2.4GHz), a 3800+ (2.4GHz 1/2M cache)
and a 4400+ (dual 2.2GHz, 1M caches). The 3400+ is always faster then the
3800+, on some tasks much faster. The 4400+ is the fastest of my systems
as expected, because it combines a 1M cache with a dual channel memory
system so even on single threaded tasks it's always faster.

If you are looking for the best bang for the buck the 3700+ is it. For
single threaded tasks it will be faster then just about anything. It will
be within 10% of a 4000+ and a much lower price.

The socket 939 3700+ will get pissed at you for suggesting that it's
only a socket 754 part. It will launch a nail-bomb style attack and
embed its pins into your head.

Wouldn't it be nice if AMD would stop using the same numbers for
incompatible parts.

However the 939 3700+ will also be a terrific performer, although it's a
little more expensive the the 754.

Yeah...err....uh...they list it as a s939 CPU?!?!? So you can see my
confusion!

I'm not concerned about saving...but this helps. Like I said, I just wasn't
sure if it was some bastard CPU....thanks muchly! (And to Cuzman too).
