a web does not exist at" my site error

Hi -- this may be simple, but I get this error message while publishing to a
site I've run for many years: "a web does not exist at" my site error. I've
had the FP extensions reinstalled, and there is no change. I can access the
site from FP via the IP address, and FP uses ftp to do this. When I try to
publish, FP again says the extensions are missing. My hosting company used a
different password to access the site that I previously had in FP (I think
:) ) The ftp access works with my old password, not the new one. I can't get
to the password screen in http access. Is this the problem, and is there a
place in the registry where passwords are stored? Or maybe another issue.
The only other I could find in Microsoft articles is a redirected folder,
but I don't think I have one, but am not exactly sure what it is.

Thanks for your help!

Every time you open the web and publish using ftp you break the extensions
and they'll have to be reset again.

Go here: http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/fpclean.htm and download FP Cleaner.
Run the functions that clear the FrontPage Temporary files and the Cache
(*.web) files.

Have the host reset the extensions one more time and then try opening the
web via http://

Hi again --

I took your steps and cleared the FP cache & temp files, confirmed that
Hostway re-installed the FP extensions, but no change upon publishing. FP
still says there in not a website at http://www.jasonprogram.org (my site).
I had previously uninstalled FP, cleaned the registry with jv16 power tools,
then reinstalled. I have created a small website on my isp to see if FP can
connect there, but the FP extensions are not yet installed. I have no known
internet connection problems. I have a router with all ports in stealth
mode, except 113 is closed. Any other ideas?

Thanks a lot,
Gary Allegretta

Open the web in Internet Explorer, and then click File > Edit with FrontPage and see what
happens.

Also, make sure your firewall ( if installed ) is not blocking FrontPage from internet
access.

Hi again --

Still no success. Using IE File >Edit with FrontPage I can open a page on
the server in FP and edit it. Still cannot publish back to the server (I
obviously need to re-publish my whole site back to the server because of the
FP extension reinstall - am I missing something simple here?). I can publish
my local web to a folder on a local USB drive. With FP I cannot access an
ISP directory that has FP extensions (10MB personal "website" offered by my
isp). I can see it with WS_FTP. I changed some things that I had recently
done, in case one of there caused the problem: reset my router to default
settings; uninstalled bluetooth software; reduced the FSB frequency in my
bios; tried FP in safe mode; gave FP full permissions in ZoneAlarm (windows
firewall off); Used FP Cleaner frequently. I do have a new Axim v51 (windows
mobile 5) with activesync 4.1, but I haven't uninstalled that.

Do you have any other ideas?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Close FrontPage.
Remove any references to the web form Network Places.
Then run regedit and go here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\FrontPage\Explorer\FrontPage
Explorer\Recent Publish List

and remove any references to the web by right clicking the value name
Web(number)
and selecting Delete:

then do the same here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\FrontPage\Explorer\FrontPage
Explorer\Recent Web List

and here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\FrontPage\Explorer\FrontPage
Explorer\Recently Created Servers

Close regedit.

Open a command window and type:
ipconfig /flushdns
and press enter.
Note there is a space between ipconfig and /flushdns

Then delete the *.web files one more time with FP Cleaner

Open FrontPage, then File > open site and try opening the live site on the
server using the http:// address.

Hi again --

Did all that. On file>open I type http://www.jasonprogram.org into the Web
name box at the bottom of the window, click OK, and a message "connecting to
web server appears, then ends after a few seconds, without the live site
opening. Still cannot publish local site to web.

FP is installed on my D drive -- the FP cleaner does say that temp and web
files are removed, but could this installation make a difference?

Thanks again (I hope they pay you enough for this service!)

Having FP on the D drive should make no difference.
FP Cleaner checks for the location of the files, based on how the machine is
set up,
and also based upon the user name that is logged into the machine.

The files that it removes are always located under a %UserProfile% location,
regardless of where FP is installed.

For example the .web files will always be here:

%UserProfile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache

and with one exception, the FrontPageTempDir will always be here:

%UserProfile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\FrontPageTempDir
The exception being that the user has tweaked the registry to move it to
another location.

Copy and paste either of the above in Start > Run or in the IE address bar
and click OK or Go.

Also, if you are never prompted for a user name and password when you try to
open http://www.jasonprogram.org
from within FrontPage, that's a sign that there's still an issue with the
extensions.

fwiw, we're all volunteers.
