A very strange workgroup problem

Hello All,
I got a very strange workgroup problem when I set up a new machine. We
have a workgroup setup in office with 5 computers, each one could see
others and share files with no problems at all. Among them, 2 are XP
with SP2, 3 are Home. The new one is XP with SP2. I wanted to put it
in the workgroup. However, whenever I click view my workgroup
computers, it freezed for over 5 minutes then an error message pop up,
"The work group is not accessible... ... The list of workgroup servers
are not currently available." Other computers in the workgroup could
see this machine thouhg, but when I double click it in other
computer's my workgroup computers, another 5 minutes waiting time and
an error message-"The workgroup is not accessible... ... The network
path was not found".

The troubleshooting steps I performed:
1.Uninstall and reinstall the File Sharing and Printing Service/reboot
2.MAke sure the group name is the same and computer name is correct
3.make sure the NetBIOS over TCP/IP is on
even tried to install the IPX netBIOS compatibility protocol/
reboot
4.IN the registry, change the node type from Unknown to Hybrid which
is the default settings on other work group computers/Reboot---Before
this change there is nothing in the "Network place" and "My workgroup
computers", after the reboot I could see the local "shared folder" and
the local machine in my workgroup computers...
5.Make sure the IP is in the same range.
6.Check the permission, log on as local admin
7.Disable the Windows Firewall/reboot
8.Some other information that needs to be mentioned: I can ping out
from this machine, but other computers in the workgroup can not ping
in. I verified there were no hubs or switches in the office. In server
room, the lay out is ISP's line coming in to a firewall router then to
a switch, then to the patch panel, then cable directly go out to the
plugs. And this new machine has the internet access.

The only thing I didn't try now is the new machine got the Norton
Protection center enabled, I didn't turn it off. But I don't know if
it is the course, because other computers have both WIndows firewall
and Norton on, and could still make the communication. Anyone has any
idea on this problem? Thank you so much!!!!!

Sincerely
Benny

Benny,

The variety of the symptoms that you describe generally comes from one of two
problems.
1) NetBT not consistently Enabled.
2) Personal firewall overlooked or not properly configured.

Is Norton Protection Center part of Norton / Symantec 2007? If so, I think that
you have 3 options.
1) Un install NAV 2007, using all instructions from Symantec.
2) Read the NAV 2007 instructions carefully, and find out what setting you have
overlooked.
3) Seek assistance from Symantec.

You are sure that you don't have another personal firewall, or other security
component, that you've overlooked?

Be careful though. Adding IPX to the mix won't help things. Keep the protocol
stack clean.
