A very good and free DVD Burner

Aplogies that this topic is probably covered trillion times in various
Groups. But was wondering if you can help me out with this one.

I have dvd ripper installed on my laptop and I also have Nero 5. I
recently ripped and burnt a dvd I rented from Blockbuster and it worked
brilliantly.

The other day I tried to burn another one and it came up this error
message: Cyclic Redundancy...
I am fed up of trying to fix it and can't do anything. I can rip the
DVD alright but when it comes to burning it, I get the error.

So, if you guys can please assist me in finding sites where I can
download free DVD burner, I would really appreciate it. I have just
bought a in-car dvd player for my son and want to keep a little Kids
DVD collection from Blockbuster where I pay to rent.

A CRC or Cyclic Redundancy Check, is a checksum on the data. It means
there is a communications problem. Sometimes, when Windows has
problems communicating with a drive over an IDE cable, it will slow
the communications rate down, to the slowest polled I/O rates.

Now, that is for a drive connected via an IDE cable. Is that how your
burner is connected ? Maybe the burner simply cannot work right, because
at polled I/O speeds (<4MB/sec), it would be hard for a high speed
burn to keep up.

With the mention of "CRC" in your symptoms, my feeling is, no amount
of new burner software, is going to put the problem right. There is an
underlying hardware issue there, of some sort. I would either find a
utility, to check the communications mode and rate (to see whether it
has dropped to PIO mode), then try the Workaround if that is the
problem. The Workaround may cure it for a short time, but like a leaky
tire, you eventually have to fix it.

If you go with a USB connected burner, for the laptop, I think you
might need Nero 6 to work over USB. I set up a drive a couple years
ago for someone, and I think that is what I needed. You could buy a
cheap 5.25" USB enclosure ($20 range) and a burner with IDE cable, and
then look for a new, full sized burner. You want a burner which comes
packaged with something like "Nero Essentials". New drives are
constantly being reviewed here, and some are better than others.
Certainly, you should be able to find a burner for under $50, to place
in the external enclosure.

The reason for suggesting an external USB solution, is if you
cannot find a permanent solution for the laptop's problem. Resolving
laptop problems is more difficult, due to the disassembly and reassembly
steps. And finding replacement parts is that much more challenging.
