A USB 2 & External HD problem on shutdown looking for a fix. (long)

Whenever I shut or reboot my computer I get the following errors in the
Event viewer's System log:

The external HD a Seagate ST3120022A in a generic 1394 USB 2 external drive
enclosure, partitioned into 3 Primary partitions, NTFS formated.
It is plugged into an NEC USB 2.0 PCI card.

Up until I re-installed XP (see below) the external harddrive has worked
perfectly. (for over a year)


I have contacted Microsoft who sent me two hotfixes to see if they resolved
this issue...

Unfortunately the hotfixes haven't fixed the problem, although when shutting
down now the number of delayed write error messages are now in single
didgits (3 - 4 messages) as opposed to the 20 - 30 messages (and taking 5 -
10m to shutdown) in the system log for the event viewer before applying the
hot fixes.

Some other things I have done along with installing the hotfixes are:

Switched off Fast User switching (I'm the only one who users the computer so
I dont really need that option)

Reduced the size of the system restore files on the external hard drive
partitions from their default size to 5% of free space.

Uninstalled and re-installed the drivers for the NEC USB 2 PCI card.

Disabled the on (mother) board USB 1.1 chipset in the Bios. (didn't make any
difference)

Removed all other USB devices plugged into the USB 2 ports and re-installed
them one at a time to see if there was a conflict between them and the
external
drive.

I have the following devices plugged into the USB 2 card with the external
hard drive.

A 'generic' multi memory card reader. It didn't come with any drivers for
XP, and runs as it should using XP's and the NEC card's drivers.

An AIPTEK graphics tablet that is currently using XP's drivers (I haven't
installed the drivers that come with it, as it works fine using XP's
drivers)

I can plug in My Palm Zire 31 in to do backups, etc. I use the card reader
to download data to the SD Card I use in this device and only plug it in
directly
to install new software and to backup the device itself.

I have also run (in Explorer):

Tools / Check Now / Automatically Fixe File System Errors and Scan For /
Attempt
Recovery Of Bad Sectors on all three partions of the external hard drive.

All three partitions on the drive are fine, with no problems reported in the
Event Viewer Logs after running the above tests/checks.


A bit more of the history of this problem may help.

I recently re-installed XP Pro, SP2, and later updates, hot fixes, etc,
(last week) and restored my system back to the way it was before the
re-install. (done to clean out all the 'c**p' left over from about a year's
worth of installing, trying, and un-installing freeware, shareware, and old
applications) Prior to that I wasn't having this problem at all.

I haven't installed any new software recently/After the re-install of XP.

I keep up to date with all patches and updates and run anti-virus software
(Trend 2005) plus various anti spyware applications.

Not sure from reading, exactly what you are complaining about(?) IF it is
only the ftdisk error message in System Event Viewer, I get this everytime I
shutdown my USB 2.0 drive also, but it is benign and never causes any
problem; i consider it 'generic' and i have never lost any data nor has any
of it been corrupted. I have had an external USb drive on my machine for
well over 2 years

Do you have a paging file on the external drive? Was the drive connected
while you were doing the Windows install?

I never had that message prior to re-installing XP 2 weeks ago. When I first
got the external drive I installed the NEC USB 2.0 card and it's drivers in
the computer, plugged in the external drive, partitioned and formated it and
started using it...

However along with the hotfixes Microsoft sent me and re-installing the NEC
USB 2.0 card's drivers the problem has been fixed.

As to ignoring such messages in event logs, how will you know when such
messages are pointing to [real] problems if you just ignore them? BTW this
message IS a real problem, it means that because XP cant write to the
external drive when shutting down, the data/file is being corrupted. I'm
picking it's system restore files for the partitions/drive that's getting
corrupted, which means system restore will (most likely) fail when you need
to use it....

Yes.
The problem has been fixed with the hot fixes Microsoft sent me, along with
re-installing the NEC USB 2.0 card's drivers AFTER installing the hot fixes.

Glad you got it fixed. Thanks for the update. As a general rule all external
drives should be disconnected while installing Windows.
