A square with 3 colors

R

Rick Webb

Hi,
When attempting to download a pdf via the Internet, I'm being directed to a
blank, white page with a tiny square in the upper left-hand corner. This
square has a blue, a green and a red dot in it. I've got a work-around for
it by right clicking on the file and using "Save as Target", but why is this
happening in the first place ?
Thanks

The problem is with the page or the server. Check to be sure you have Java
installed:
http://www.clan.lib.ri.us/clan/javatest.html If not, go to www.sun.com and
download the latest Java Virtual Machine. If you have java support, from
what you describe, the problem appears to be an issue at the site or on the
server and not on your system.

The link you passed on to me is no longer valid I guess. I went to Sun and
Downloaded Java2 and installed it. (I hope that was the right program).
Still the same when trying to view pdf's..
I'll keep trying... Thanks

I apologize about the link, try this one, I just tested it and it works:
http://www.pocoso.de/pocoso052.html

It also occurred to me, if you are trying to view, PDFs, do you have Adobe
Acrobat installed as you will need that to view PDFs. If Adobe Acrobat is
not installed, it's possible the site is picking that up and may be the
source of the issue. Adobe Acrobat is a PDF reader and can be downloaded
from www.adobe.com.

Hi Michael,
I tried that link and it worked. It says I have Java configured correctly.
How does that card trick work anyway ? That's creepy...
Anyway, I do have Adobe Reader 6.0 installed. I can open up pdf's once they
are Downloaded ,but don't seem to have much luck reading them online, or on
the fly.Another weird thing that is happening is, quite often now I'm not
getting direct links to the page I want or request. I get that page that
says "No longer available or Check your Link". Then the page will appear
after I hit the link on that page. It's like I'm being re-routed quite a
lot.
Thanks
Rick

Based on what you've posted, I'm inclined to think there's an issue at the
site. The only other thing I can think of to check would be to be sure your
graphics drivers are up to date.

The "No longer available or Check your Link" is common. Web addresses
change frequently, I can only suggest, when redirected that you update your
links accordingly and delete the previous link.

Now, about that card trick, I have no idea!:)

Much appreciated Michael - I'll check my Graphic Driver situation. My Video
card went on me a couple of days ago and I'm borrowing a friends Voodoo4
Card. Maybe that's the key. I'll look into it.
Thanks Again

That card trick is easy to figure out.

None of the original cards appear on the final group of cards, so the card
you picked has to be gone. :))

Now, there's a sharp eye and it makes perfect sense. I really hadn't
noticed that.

Thanks.

I didn't even notice the trick until Rick Webb mentioned it!<LOL>

I always thought I was pretty quick on the draw, but that just blew right by
me. I didn't even clue into that. Man, I'm going to check that again.
Thanks for the keen eye...
Question: Where did you two learn so much about computers ? Practical or
Schooling ? Or a little of both ? I for one really appreciate the service
you provide for us here in the newsgroup. Thanks for that !

M

Michael Solomon \(MS-MVP Windows Shell/User\)

In my case, for the most part it's practical along with an attitude that
there's always something new to learn which fits well with my being an
information junky. Before I purchased my first PC, I did a lot of homework,
checking what I needed to know, what was important in terms of making a
purchase and that sort of got the ball rolling.

Initially, I went online because more and more companies were putting
patches and drivers on their websites. I had read you could find a wealth
of information in newsgroups and slowly gravitated to them, initially,
simply to find out what was there. In finding answers to my own questions
and issues I found I could also help others and, I guess, one thing led to
another.

I admit I've had computers in my life in one way or another for most of my
life and computers were a part of just about every business in which I've
been involved though early on the computers were mainframes. Nonetheless,
it gave me at lot of experience and coupled with my natural instinct to
explore produced knowledge along with a lot more questions that always need
to be answered.

I frankly, didn't pay attention to that trick until you mentioned it as I
only focused on the idea of whether or not you could see an image in the box
as a test of Java function being enabled on your system. When I'm working
the boards, I tend to become rather focused so I'm not sure I really zeroed
in as Ron with his keen eye managed to do.<LOL>

Very Interesting Michael... I've also got an appetite for learning (I read
manuals of all sorts) which I get razzed about. However; computers , I've
just got going on about 2 years ago. I have a Home Studio in which I write
/ record music and I've gravitated from Analog Hardware to using Digital
Hardware / Software. I'd like to learn as much as I can with Windows XP. My
knowledge base is expanding now with the Audio Applications that I use, but
working around XP , I'm still rather unskilled to say the least. I will work
on that though, thanks to people like you who throw out lifelines to us
novices. I guess you and the other MVP's could be deemed " Computer
Lifeguards". It's nice to hear that people like yourself still have a
passion for learning (or for a job they do) that never seems to get stale.
Until I get a certain level of expertise under my belt , I'll be asking for
help along the way.
Cheers

After all that - it turns out my Acrobat Reader was corrupt. Reinstalled
program and the little box with 3 colours is gone. Everything seemed to work
on the Reader , but I guess not everything. :)
Works now though.
