I'd say IrfanView, though I've never literally timed it. Just open it and click
thumbnail....it will show every image on your hd
in a matter of seconds...depending on your hd size, speed, etc. I've opend an entire
CD of photos with IrfanView in a matter
of secods... maybe minutes...if the latter..then 3 at the most.

Oops....... I forgot to add that you need to click on the folder with your photos...
then just watch
them fly open.... I just opened a folder with almost 700Mb of photos and it took less
than 2 minutes
using the thumbnails..

IrfanView used to be very fast on older computers IIRC.

I haven't used IrfanView in a while since Irfan refused to make a 1 key exit
from the full screen view by pressing the ESC key. (you had to press the ESC
key twice to exit)

I currently use FastStone Image Viewer, and it toggles through rather large
pictures so fast I can't make it lag. Neither can I make Firgraphic or
Cam2PC lag. All 3 are totally excellent apps.

Whew, how busy are you when you can't push an esc key twice instead of once.

The question isn't how busy you are but what you're busy looking at
that needs to vanish so completely and immediately. ;)

InfranView, not just speed but the shortcut keys eg spacebar to move
to next image...
Dont you hate those freebee viewers the come with cameras?

Have you checked out Picasa2 from google, I now use that to manage my
images...

Just as an aside, Irfanview provides some handy command line options -
one of which will open a specific folder in thumbnail view.
If you create a shortcut to Irfanview and paste the following (
ammended to suit, of course ) into the 'target' box, it'll open on
that directory with the thumbnails on view.

"i_view32.exe c:\mypix\" /thumbs

I guess most people keep their pix in a group of subfolders, and this
shortcut provides a fast way to access and browse them.

used it for a bit, until I discovered it adding files all over the place

irfanview.. and if you want to see how fast it loads an image, just press I
for information

(417 milliseconds for a 1.855kb image to load, 3170 for a 16,602kb TIF)

That doesn't sound very fast to me, but of course it depends on your CPU. On
an Athlon XP 2000+, TrackerV3 just needs around 800ms to load a 22MB TIF,
and around 500ms for an 1500KB JPEG (2272x1704 pixel; JPEGs are always much
harder to decode, of course). I would expect irfanview to be faster, because
it's a specialized image viewer (but I did not check because I don't have
it).

Irfanview is pretty good ... BUT, it has one major annoyance
for me that gets in the way of using it. Skiljan exhibits
the pictures onscreen by jamming them to the extreme upper left.
Most all other competitor programs center the viewed pictures
right in the middle of the screen. I've contacted him before on
the subject, but he seems pre-occupied with other fluff. So, I
stick to Faststone. His opinion of XNView, though, pretty much
parallels my own.

How about Options/Misc 2/Windows options:
Centre window when loading new image

=======================

That's not the same thing. You are confusing centering the
picture with centering the window. When you have the option
set for the window to vary in size according to picture pixel
dimensions, then your method will work ... IF you are
satisfied with the window continually changing size, and
being wildly distracted by whatever underlying desktop is
exposed. (other open programs, wallpaper, etc)

For me .. I vastly much rather prefer that my viewer programs
remain fully maximized to cover all of that underlying stuff,
and to present a pleasing solid black background with all
pictures (regardless of size) centered in the middle of the
blackness. All other similar programs I have used do this ..
but, not IrfanView.

Mostly children and dead relatives. Lots of shiny new babies and toddlers.
Nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and even stupid pets. My wife can't get
enough pictures of them. We have 1000's. Me? I can't tell the difference in
many of them. She can!

Pressing ESC is not about time. It's the principle of the thing. By God when
she presses ESC, the program had better exit! :)

Irfan is stubborn as a mule.
