A Problem with an Index

D

Dudley Wright

I have a 180 page document which contains both a Table of Contents and
an Index. I am having a problem with the Index. A number of items
listed in the Index are contained in Tables, which span more than one
page. It appears that the page number the Index field references, is
the page on which the table begins and not the page the item actually
is contained on.
Is there a way to correct this so that the page number referenced in
the Index is the actual page the item appears.

Thank you for any suggestions.

Hi Dudley

In Word 2003 I can't replicate this problem. I created a table with two
rows, where the first row is on page 1, and the second row is on page 2. I
put an index mark in row 1 and an index mark in row 2. And Word properly
creates the index accurately.

Maybe this was a problem in earlier versions of Word that has been fixed. If
you have an earlier version of Word, a work around may be to split the table
(Table > Split).

Hope this helps.

FWIW, I had an index in a Word 97 document that was mostly tables, and,
although I had a lot of problems with the index, I don't think this was one
of them.

I never did figure out the why, but you suggestion to split the
offending tables was a good work around. I split them above the Index
fields on the correct pages. My index is now correct.
And, by the way, I am using Word 2002.
Thank you.
