I am dual booting xp prof with vista ultimate, and have been using vista as
my primary os for the last 7 months or so.
I did an vista update last week, and on restarting the pc, vista wouldn't
boot. i then logged onto xp to make sure my pc was fine, and it was just
vista playing up. i then decided to use the vista dvd to attempt system
repair. system repair failed, and came up with the following:

A patch is preventing the system from starting.
The fact that a patch was preventing the system from starting made me think
that if i attempted system restore, i'll be able to go back to it was before
the update. unfortunately, i have subsequently learnt that logging into xp
wiped away any system restore information that i had!
i was able to get some stop information on the BSOD as well, with the result
being:
STOP: 0x0000007B (0x83006BA0, 0xC0000034, 0X00000000, 0x00000000)
i have tried all the safe mode options, and it gives me the same problem.
the last update i did was for a realtek lan card, which might be the faulty
patch. since then i have removed the card, and even installed a new
motherboard, as i was having problems with the other one. i have a
4coredual-vsta.
i could do a re-install, i have the dvd, but it is a nuisance that i would
rather avoid if anyway possible.
so the question i have is, has anyone fixed this problem without having to
reinstall, and also is there anything i can do to fix it from inside xp?
