"A data file did not close properly" when Outlook opened

I don't believe it has anything to do with profiles or importing/exporting. I
have seen the problem on my work laptop but not at my home machine which is
runing the same versions of Vista and Office. I always check my mail at home
and close Outlook and then much later I turn off the PC but at work I usually
close Outlook and turn of the computer once Outlook closes. It appears to me
that Outlook does not close when you think it did.

I have had the same problem with Outlook 2007 running in Vista.
Having trawled through this entire thread, I also found that once I removed
the Google Toolbar the problem disappeared.

Hope this helps others with similar problems. I did not appreciate the
comment made by one of the respondents that "It doesn't affect anything so
just close the error message dialogue box"

I have one user who has loads of problems w/ Outllook'07 on Vista. Early on
I too found that disabling the Google Desktop add-in seemed to help some of
the closure problems. (Is that what Tony is referring to?)

This user still has other problems that cause his OST to become corrupted
but that's for another thread!

I thought I had cured the "Data file did not close properly" error
message by deleting the Google add-in and my .pst files but it
returned today although it's not taking so long to "check" the file
now. I have no add-ins except those Outlook 2007 (under WinXP) puts
there by default.

When I close Outlook down, checking with Task Manager, it closes
pretty much immediately, so this isn't the issue as others have found.

Also, anyone know why Outlook delays opening a web link after it
starts? An odd rainbow coloured strip moves along the top of the
message while it cogitates then the page will open. From that point
web links open instantly.

Unisntalling Google Desktop Search completely seems to have done the
trick. I have installed MSN Desktop Search which integrates better and
has, so far, been excellent.

Just a comment on your number 5 solution...
5. Ignore the message. It is harmless and often goes away after a while.

It is not harmless, as the verification REALLY slows down my computer...

Not yet. There appear to be myriad causes for the message and no consistent
cause or solution. Some things that have helped:
1. If you did an upgrade installation, make sure you create a new Outlook
profile from scratch.
2. If you migrated a previous PST file, make sure you did so correctly (open
the file in Outlook, do not use WET or import).
3. Run the Inbox Repair Tool on the file manually repeatedly until no error
messages are found.
4. Make sure Outlook is exiting completely before you relaunch it.
5. Ignore the message. It is harmless and often goes away after a while.

So has anybody found an answer to this problem?
I see lots of post about the data file not closing, And lots of
suggestions,
try this try that.

But I don't see any responses that say,Yes that fixed it.

I have Vista Ultimate running Office 2007, Outlook 2007.
I periodically get that message, Maybe every other time I start Outlook.
Today it's all I get and I can't read my email.

For me, uninstalling Google Desktop fixed the problem

A file did not close properly and is being checked for problems

I had an issue is Outlook 2007 running on XP. The error message would display and then the program would shut down. I went to the start menu then went to RUN.

I typed in outlook \safe and opened outlook in safe mode. The mailbox opened fine. Then I exited out of safe mode and opened it up again directly. Problem solved.

Apparently the program was shut down abruptly causing the problem. Hope this helps. Also, there is a space between outlook and the forward slash in the above command.

I have Vista Premium and Outlook 2007. I am experiencing exactly the same issue. Leaving Outlook open for 1o mins corrects the problem but this is painful.

I have also the same problem in outlook 2003. Every time i start outlook i get the error data file error. To solve this I have go to the Task Manager and close the Outlook.exe process. Then i realize that this is because your process is not close even after you have closed your outlook pst.To avoid this problem always try to close your outlook some time before shutting down your system or you can check in the task manager that the either outlook.exe is running or not. If it is running close it before turn off your computer.

If your pst file is badly corrupted or lost you can use outlook pst repair software. It is easy to use and provides powerfull recovery solution for pst. To check its
efficiency & recovery capability download the free demo version of software at
