data file didn't close correctly on exit - error message

Now that outlook opens again - every time I reopen outlook, provided there
were any changes the last time in outlook, I get the error message that says
a data file did not close properly... - then a second window opens saying the
data check is complete. Anyone know why and what to change so that stops
happening? I already discontinue the option for deleting files from the
deleted folder on exit.

Generally it means that Outlook isnt closing properly, usually caused by a
third party addin, eg integrated anti virus app.
Next time you close Outlook, after a couple of mins, start Task Manager, in
running processes check if outlook.exe is still shown (Clicking Title Bar
sorts the processes)

In one of your previous posts you were insisting that you have no other
applications that are interfering with Outlook, yet the symptoms you describe
suggested, as other pointed out, that, in fact, you do and what you describe
here also points to that, as DL indicated. So, despite your belief that you
don't have such an application, I'd suggest you investigate that further.

Have actually done that - just went through all sorts of things to be able to
run scanpst.exe and open outlook - making sure outlook wasn't running was
part of that excercise. Any other possible cause? Thanks. I have mcafee, but
have always had mcafee and this problem has only been going on for a month or
so.

It is not unusual for an antivirus program to update itself silently and break
its ability to interface with Outlook correctly. You should uninstall McAfee
and reinstall it without any mail scanning. You will be just as safe and it
cannot interfere with Outlook.

I'll try the mcafee reinstall without email scanning - if there is anything
else running that could be interfering with outlook I can't imagine what it
would be - I don't do anything much or download much. Plus I've been using
outlook and mcafee for quite some time yet this is a new problem - no other
new software or hardware, same internet service, no printer or mobile with an
email connection - with the exception of mcafee updates. So I'll try this
(and I read your other post) and we shall see. Thanks much.

next thing I just noticed - I turned off the feature to automatically empty
deleted files on exiting - so I manually empty that folder before exiting.
Twice now, when I reopen and get that error message, the messages are back in
the deleted file despite my having manually emptied that folder. Does that
sync with this pattern and possible causes?

I've never seen this for any accounttype other than Exchange and I don't see
how it's possible for a PST-based Deleted Items folder.

I was wondering if you ever managed to find a solution to this issue? I'm
intending to upgrade from Outlook 2003 to 2007 using GPO. I've got the
upgrade working fine, but all 4 of the Outlook 2007 clients are having the
problem that you described. I'm not prepared to roll this out over the rest
of the orginisation without a solution.

All of our clients run XP pro (SP3). I have diasbled all add-ins using the
trust center and reinstalled AVG 9 without any mail plugins. I have also
stopped Outlook emptying the deleted items folder on exit, and even stopped
it checking its' POP3 account on a schedule - but the problem remains. Our
..pst files are all redirected to a server share, but I can't see this is a
problem as all other MS software, including previous versions of Outlook,
work fine in a redirected environment.

Any hints of tips in addition to the ones given would be gratefully recieved.

Is this for Exchange-based accounts?
