A CPU and motherboard upgrade is causing irregular hardware freezes.

Hello!
My computer began to freeze irregularly (monitors go blank, keyboard
stops responding, HDDs stop working, sometimes a cyclic sound appears
from a motherboard speaker output) after replacing motherboard
Chaintech 6btm, P3-750, 526Mb RAM with motherboard Asus P5W DH Deluxe,
Core 2 Duo E6750, 2Gb RAM, Gigabyte HD 2600 pro. Replacing Asus P5W DH
Deluxe with Asus P5K, Gigabyte HD 2600 pro with another exemplar,
replacing PSU FSP350-60GLN with Zalman 460B-ASP have not helped.
The HUTIL utility self test shows that Samsung HDD SP2514N is healthy.
What is causing the freezes? How to prevent the freezes?

Dima

Try seeing if the Intel Chipset Software Installation utility helps.

SO let me understand this clearly. You went from a Chaintech 6BTM >
Asus P5K > Asus P5W? Did you clean format and install?

I have too many programmes and old custom settings which it would be
very difficult to recover after a clean format and install. I followed
microsoft support recommendation: run Windows upgrade installation
under windows, shut down computer when it automatically restarted,
replaced motherboard, turned on the computer, the installation
completed successfully, I installed all the needed new drivers and
windows updates.

The freezes look like they are caused by hardware: There are no error
messages, there is no mouse pointer freeze on a screen, the computer
just suddenly stops working: stops showing image on a screen, HDD
stops, keyboard stops responding to even Caps, Num, Scroll locks.

When doing a "Upgrade" it's common to have problems, that's why most
people do a full install instead of an Upgrade.

It sounds like you have a heat problem, or that you didn't properly
install the heat-sink, but it could easily be a driver that is causing
the problem.

There are just too many variables to know for sure what the problem is.

A wipe/reinstall on a new hard-drive would let you know if it's drivers
or hardware.

Everest and Asus Probe 2 show that CPU surface tempreture is never
higher than 45C, and CPU core tempreture is never higher than 56C,
motherboard tempreture is never higher than 45C under full load.

Regards,

Go purchase a cheap new drive, remove the old one (to save for later),
and install from scratch - once you've done this you will then know, if
it works without problem, that your hardware is fine and that the drives
you've loaded/software you are using is fine.

Now, you can start installing software until it breaks.

You could also consider doing a Windows XP Repair/Install so that you
reload the OS without having to wipe the drive.

Did you do a fresh install of windows afterwards, or at least a repair
install?

You will never be able to fix this problem due to the manner in which
you went about the upgrade. You have to re-install clean no matter
WHAT Microsoft says. You've gone from an early platform to a DUAL-CORE
platform. You will be experiencing problems because you've gone from
single CPU to dual. When installing, the system is configured for
single or 2-or-more configuration. There isn't any way around it that
I am aware of except to re-install.

Why assume Windows (which is probably bad enough to cause it all)?
The OS may very well be some version of Linux. At any rate, it
smells like a memory fault, or a possible loose connection
somewhere. If the OP has ECC memory he can probably discard the
idea of a memory fault. Another possibility is power supply
reaching marginality.

I run an Windows upgrade install to replace the motherboard. Is the

No idea, I've never done it that way. I've always done a clean install
or a repair/reinstall method.

I really suggest that you get a new hard drive, even a cheap 40GB refurb
- about $30, and install clean to test your hardware. None here are
going to be able to tell you where the problem is with so many possible
problems. You need to isolate it to hardware or software, and without a
fresh install it's going to be dang near impossible to do that.

1. What errors are present in the event viewer after one of these freezes?

2. Have you tested your PSU's output voltages? (guides available in the
archives of this group and many places online, with images)

3. Instead of banging your head trying to figure this out, back up your
data (it should have been backed up anyway prior to changing
motherboards) and do a clean install (reformat, reinstall) of windows.

Cheers,

Ari

What gfx card are you using and have you tried installing a different one?
